Hemlock Hideaway and its 18 acres was originally part of a larger 100-acre plot that was surveyed and settled in the late 1700's by Gideon Granger of the Connecticut Land Company. Granger sold it to one Jehoikim Burget in 1815 for the whopping price of $400. The resident house was built in 1816 by Burget and then passed down to family members over the next 5 generations, until we bought it in 2003, marking the first time the house and remaining property were ever officially sold. In the mid 1800's, a grist mill was put up across the river from the cabin, and our creek was the main road in and out of that operation. There is a gravestone belonging to the wife of Jehoikim's son, she being half Native American and therefore couldn't be buried in the local white cemetery. We also own the original hand-written deed from 1815 detailing the sale of the original 100 acres to Jehoikim Burget. Learn more about this land: Our primitive cabin nestled in the woods overlooking the Grand River is a nature-lover's paradise! Come canoe, fish, experience wine country, or unplug and just get away from it all. Please note: There is no running water or electricity at the site, but the cabin is generator-ready and there is an outhouse.  The cabin does have a wood burning stove for heat and simple cooking, however there is no running water or electricity.  That being said, the building is wired and has plugs and outlets and is generator-ready.  You provide your own generator and fuel.  We provide bottled water, sheets, pillows, flashlights, a fire ring with cooking grate, charcoal grill (you provide the charcoal), access to firewood, and an outhouse with toilet paper.  Our 1/4 mile of Grand River frontage can be accessed right outside the cabin door via a quick hike down the somewhat steep hillside.  If hiking isn't preferred, then a quick two-minute drive will take you to the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Metropark - a favorite of local fishermen.  Bigger groups with tents are welcome, but will need to bring all supplies beyond what we provide for two guests.

Perfect offgrid getaway
Loved my time at the cabin. It is was just as described and made for a perfect night to get away in the woods. If you do choose to hike down to the river be aware of how steep it is especially as this time of year it can be wet. Looking forward to coming back again in the future!

Wonderful Camping Experience
We had such a lovely time camping on Lisa’s land! We tent camped and used the little cabin to store our food, gear, and bags. It couldn’t have been more perfect, especially with the certain “amenities” provided. We did take the hike down the hill to the river, which was rather steep and not for everyone, but it was well worth it. Lisa was very kind and shared some great stories with us when her dog came out to great us as we picked up more wood. I would highly recommend staying here!!

The dog and I both loved it!
My dog and I stopped here on the last day of a road trip. It was nice having a place where we didn't need to set up the tent - the dog LOVED being able to stay inside (he's a bit of a homebody and this was day 9 out of 10). I loved being able to scoot down the hill to see the water, it was absolutely beautiful, and felt like a secret discovery just beyond the campsite. One thing I wish I had reconsidered was my blue light lantern. Mine attracted hornets at night, and I ended up leaving it on through the night until morning to avoid upsetting them. Next time we will definitely bring a yellow light lantern to make it the perfect experience.

Small cabin, big fun!
The cabin, setting, and location of the cabin are perfect! The six of us, 2 adults and 4 children found abundant opportunities for activities and rest. We went to the beach, kayaked, fossil hunting, plant identification, fishing, bird watching, wine tasting, campfires, sing alongs, storytelling… we will return for the changing seasons. The site provides a charming cabin with plenty of room for additional tents.

Lovely few days at the cabin for my four and a half year old grandson and me. Got to teach him about fire rings, barbecues, outhouses, walking about under a beautiful green leaf canopy and sleeping in a loft. Did not try the steep route down to tge river with him. Kid wanted to stay longer. Place is as described. Thanks, Lisa.

A quick getaway! For the dogs too!
My 12 year old son, our 2 dogs and I had a nice relaxing getaway, an hour from home! Very affordable! It was my first time using Hipcamp, and I was pleasantly surprised with not being slammed with cleaning and service fees, doubling the price, like Airbnb and Vrbo do. That makes taking a quick trip, a drive away from home, affordable for us which is so important to our entire family’s mental health! So thank you, Patrick and Lisa, for building a special place and allowing for people to enjoy your property as much as you do! We will most definitely be back ❤️.

Lisa was very informative about all of the details at the Hemlock Hideaway. The cabin was so cozy and clean with freshly made bedding and a really nice wood burning stove. The stay was peaceful and quiet, there is a small waterfall and the Grand River near by that make lovely water sounds all night. I’m for sure going back whenever I need a little peace and tranquillity!

Truly a great tiny cabin getaway
This was a beautiful getaway. The perfect little cabin getaway in the woods. Every detail was there and everything was just as you would want. The setting of the cabin was great, it felt secluded and nestled in the woods even though it was so easy to get to. The directions that Lisa gives to find the place were great. Definitely buy the wood for the stove in the cabin, it helps a lot. Thanks so much for all the effort you have put into the details of this place.

Halloween Weekend Getaway
It was so cozy!! I felt so accomplished building a fire in the wood burning stove! I felt like, yeah, I could like off grid if I wanted!! Haha! Everything was just perfect for our stay, the cabin, the property (the river rushing just below), the location, even the little outhouse with composting toilet! It was a perfect Halloween weekend get-a-way! Cozy and inviting inside, and private and charming outside!

Great Lil Getaway
This was a perfect lil getaway if you want to experience the outdoors without going into the backwoods with all of your gear :) I loved the cabin and the amenities (grill, fire pit, and picnic table). I suggest anyone looking for a quick dose of nature to stay here!

A peaceful respite in nature
What a lovely lil cabin & beautiful property! Very quiet, peaceful. Lisa was a great host, very accommodating. My favorite was making my way down to the creek & river (a careful descent down a hill that I did in closed-toe teva sandals—I would call this moderate-difficult according to a Metroparks rating scale). BUT TOTALLY WORTH IT! The cabin & natural setting it’s in is worth the visit, even if you don’t meander down to the creek. I look forward to returning in cooler weather when I can enjoy a fire in the cabin! Thanks Lisa!

We had a wonderful time. Not having electric or water just added to the fun and relaxation of being away. It was a cold night but the wood burner kept us nice and toasty. Lisa was amazing! We will definitely be back! Such a fun date night.

Secluded Cabin right off the Grand!
The camp was beautiful and my family and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Lisa was so nice and welcoming and she made our stay very special. There were fresh cut flowers in the cabin and a very nice brand new woodburning stove that kept us cozy all weekend. The cabin had a magical feel with fairy lights strung up all around. It was very clean and there were lots of unexpected amenities in the little bookshelf inside the cabin. It felt very secluded despite the closeness to the little town where there was a country store, the grand river, tons of wineries, and several fast food restaurants, gas stations, dollar store, and even a dunkin donuts if thats your thing. I hope to come back and stay again very soon 💗

So naturally stunning all around. The cabin has everything you need in the sweetest ways... little solar lights here and there , very clean outhouse, a morning wakeup in treetops. The stove is just fine to cook a little, boil water for hot tea and to heat the entire place. The river is incredibly scenic. More so than images reveal.
