Pitch a tent or park your RV right off the main road to the spectacular Lost Coast of California. Our property is located 5 minutes from Cape Mendocino beach and 4 minute drive to downtown Petrolia, we are surrounded by scenic pastoral views and ancient forest. We have multiple camping options and a wood chip driveway that can accommodate a couple RV's (or vehicle camping). Our land has fields and forest, a seasonal creek, and incredible star gazing. We are right on the Mattole Road, so the RV spots and campsites close to the road with easy access will see cars, but we have 26 acres including plenty of tucked away spots that can be walked to and are far from the road if you are seeking seclusion. We are working on developing campsites, but for now, you can have your choice of where to camp on the property. You can sleep out in an open meadow or in the forest under the Pepperwood trees. This is a working farm, so there are livestock and everything that comes along with them on the property! We have sheep, goats, geese, ducks, and chickens. The sheep and goats free range most of the time on the property, but are accostomed to people and usually either keep their distance or stop by to say hi. We have building and ecological restoration projects on the property as well. Our property has been farmed and ranched since the late 1860's and has a beautiful old barn. As the most recent stewards of the land, our family is starting a small organic farm on it utilizing regenerative agricultural methods. It is a beautiful place and a work in progress! For now we can offer a rustic outhouse, fresh spring water, a sink for dishes, and Wi-Fi access to our guests, as well as knowledge of the local area. Downtown Petrolia has a general store (sells gas but only accepts cash), Sunday Farmer's Market at the community center, a pioneer cemetery to explore, the gorgeous Mattole River for fishing and swimming, and access to the Mattole Beach. *Note: this is called the Lost Coast for a reason. It is gorgeous and remote, but the roads are winding, steep, and poorly maintained in some areas. We only our two wheel drive Prius out here, so the roads are definitely navigable, just a bit intense. Sarah's property is beautiful and the location is ideal for campers looking to spend time on the Lost Coast. Sarah and her family were gracious and knowledgeable hosts and all her communications were very clear. I would absolutely recommend Sarah's property!

We had such a blast at Sara’s. They have two baby goats that are very talkative and friendly, it’s so fun having them around. They have a six year old boy who will show you around the farm. Good place to stay if you want to catch the sunset at the beach.

Lost Coast Petrolia Mattole Rd Camp
This was our favorite stay! Sara was super friendly, kind and fascinating. Her place on the “Lost Coast” is wonderful! The parking area is covered in wood chips. There is a table and sink and a very clean composting toilet. The farm animals are fun to watch and interact with. And the official ambassador, their 7-year-old son was the best! The road from Ferndale is narrow, winding and rough! Low vehicles or larger RV’s will have difficulty. We have a Dodge Grand Caravan and we drove very slowly. The 24-mile drive took over an hour. But the beauty was totally worth it!! Although I wouldn’t drive it at night. It’s really worth experiencing this remote area if you can make the drive!

The host was extremely kind, had many ideas to help us. Unfortunately the property wasn’t what we expected or were looking for. A lot of sheep poop. High grass that cuts your leg, I do t know how you even use a gas stove in that. The “forested” area required AWD which we did not know. She did direct us to actual state campgrounds which were cheaper and cleaner and easier. She was extremely kind. I just would want an honest review.

Lost Coast Petrolia Mattole Rd Camp
Lovely place to camp and go on day trips to experience the Lost Coast. My friends camped out in tents & I slept in my car bed. Everything you need is there. It’s so quiet, the farm animals are sweet & friendly. Sara and her family are so accommodating and lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed camping there. The area is a trip! Beautiful beaches, rugged coastline, beautiful river nearby to spend an afternoon swimming & lounging. I understand there’s a hike nearby to a lighthouse. The town of Petrolia is close and has great sandwiches at the general store. I also had the best felafel pita ever at a food truck parked there. Do be prepared to drive on country roads but if you take it easy, you will enjoy some breathtaking scenery. I recommend the route from 101 thru Humboldt Redwoods State Park to Honeydew & Petrolia. It’s a fairytale ride.

We loved our stay at Sara’s! The site is private, quiet, and well maintained. Sara, and her husband and son are super warm and welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. We also enjoyed meeting their animals and our property tour. There is hiking on the property and so much Lost Coast beauty in all directions! We hope to return!

Bucket List worthy scenic drive!

I came to Sarah's place from the South, for that I had to path through Hambolt State Park's Avenue of the Giants - DO IT! The drive was enchanting, winding road, a pleasure to ride on sunset. Truly for Nature drive lovers! It is also absolutely Gorgeous drive North from Sarah's place! Beauty is incomparable to anything I saw, even in my childhood, must to take the time and enjoy the drive through the truly Lost coastline, meadows of wildflowers, round hills and mountains! The road is bumpy and this is the invitation for you to slow down and enjoy the scenery, not rushing to your destination. Both roads from South and North are suitable for 2W drive, but go slow and enjoy the country's beauty we still have here! For the whiners about the road, just don't come, leave it for us, gipsy souls and those who are looking to re-connect with Nature and Beauty. Not many people and cars around in this area even in the heart of a Summer - rare and precious ! Sarah's place was comfy sleep in my car on a flat area covered with wood chips. She has spring water to drink and wash up. I enjoyed seeing goats and ducks passing on a pasture, but I regret not to buy some goat milk and duck eggs from Sarah, thought about it later, but you do it - what a wonderful way to support a wholesome young family who work hard on a land and give us opportunity to stay for the night!

A hidden gem on the lost coast

Lost Coast Petrolia Mattole Rd Camp
There are a lot of hipcamp's that pull out all the stops for good photos. There are far fewer where a host has a deep connection and love of the land and wants to share that. This is that rare place. Minutes away from Black Sand Beach, it's a gem and you won't find anything else like it on the Lost Coast. There's a sink and a well kept compost outhouse and lots of land for tent campers to find solitude. Car campers and sleepers can park in a small mulched patch.

This was a wonderful experience camping on Sara’s farm. Sarah and her son were great hosts, we were greeted upon arrival and they showed us everything we needed to know about the camping. The young boy was delightful to talk to and very knowledgeable of the farm. Beautiful views and a peaceful camping experience. Very dog friendly and an out house that was clean and accessible. I would definitely recommend this off grid camping experience.

Sara is fabulous and her hipcamp was true to her description. The property is large and there is space to spread out. Parking is near her house and then you carry your stuff to where you want to camp (or use her wheel barrel). We were greeted and given a tour of the place by her 6 year old son that is a gem! There are goats and sheep and ducks in the pasture you camp in, cows and zebras across the road, and it’s a rural spot, road and nature sounds are present - so this place isn’t completely quiet but cars are infrequent and it sure is gorgeous! Definitely have some of her eggs and she can help recommend things to do. We went on a hike she recommended and were very happy! The stars and views were plentiful as were the good vibes - we’ll be back for sure.

Sara's property was so unique and cool. The drive out there was desolate and otherworldly, beautiful sights. The camping spot was great, we heard cows moo-ing from far away and her goats were SO adorable.

Sara and her lovely family couldn’t have been more welcoming, or generous with their time and property . Our daughter loved playing with Sara’s son , and milking the goats. We had a really comfortable - and fun -stay. The property is in the most beautiful location imaginable , and it is well worth travelling the extra ( stunning) miles! And the beach just down the road is very special and wild. Very very highly recommended!

Lost Coast Petrolia Mattole Rd Camp
I loved tent camping on Sarah’s land! Such a beautiful part of California I probably never would have ended up in. Petrolia or Mattole Valley is so beautiful and it really feels like a special place. It’s kind of a long, somewhat paved road in and out, twists and turns, but such a scenic drive. I came from the South and then left to the North, the beach is only 2mi away. Such a private epic coastline. Sarah’s land was so peaceful, my dog and I had a great time. Sarah’s kid (6yo) gave me an in depth tour, fed me fir needles and linden leaves, played with my dog, helped me pack up my tent. It was all pretty adorable :) thank you Sarah for a great stay! Would love to come back!

We had such a wonderful time at Lost Coast Petrolia Mattole Rd Camp! Sara was kind enough to give us a tour of the property and we not only learned so much but truly enjoyed our time there. They have big plans for the property and are true stewards of their land. Would love to go back in the future. Although this area of Humboldt county isn't the easiest to get to, it's totally worth it. The views are gorgeous, the air is fresh and the host was personable and helpful. It's a really special place!

We loved this stay! A beautiful field to set up camp with access to some woods to explore. It’s a heck of a drive to get there but with a beautiful coastal view about 2 minutes away it’s absolutely worth it!

Camping on Sara's land was a magical experience. The farm has sweeping views of the grassy mountains across the road, and contains a mix of open grassy pastures and serene, sheltered forest, so there are great options for campsites. There was great bird watching when I was there as well. The beach is just a couple miles down the road, and I was the only person there when I visited--quite a way to feel small. Visiting the Lost Coast felt like a trip to another era. I highly recommend a visit to anyone who is looking to take a break from daily life and recharge in a beautiful place.
