Elkhorn Trading Post and RV sites

Elkhorn trading post was a very unique camp spot. We enjoyed the bar/restaurant. Best priced drinks on our entire trip. The store wasn't always open as advertised but we made due. The drive into Jackson was very scenic and beautiful! I would definitely stay again.

Easy to find and right off the highway! We arrived late and left early and didn’t make use of the bathrooms or store or anything, but that was ok!

DUMP

The restaurant is “ok” for a remote location, though it lakes customer service. The RV park is a dump with mostly full timers in run down cabins and campers setup to drain water on ground. There are chickens running around everywhere. It’s a dump! No dump station anywhere to be found and water is only available through an old water hose coming out of a run down building. DUMP!

The lodge itself was quirky and eccentric, but is fun and interesting, and the burgers we had for dinner were excellent. The RV park in the back was just a parking lot, which is fine if you’re just looking for a place to park and sleep (which we were). However, there are cabins and other buildings between the lodge and the RV parking lot that were just a mess. Half of the cabins appear to be lived in year-round or at least seasonally, and are very run down. There is a shed or garage of sorts just behind the lodge that has random crap spilling out of it. Walking from a parked RV to the bathroom requires walking right past all of random crap. The place generally looks awful.

amenties listed included a toilet but we couldn’t find it. The general store/gas station was closed on the Monday we stayed so we were not able to access a toilet inside the building if there was one.

Ian was very communicative and helpful. It is important to note that there is no shade at the site. The bathroom is pretty primitive (except the women's room, which I didn't discover until a few days after we were there. ) I appreciated the proximity to Grand Teton National Park. and the food was good at the bar... Just a pretty rustic place....

Basic sites and friendly staff

Nice and simple site, friendly staff. When we went the restaurant wasn't open unfortunately (open tues-sat). When you arrive you pull into whichever space you want that's open, so don't expect it to be the one you reserved if someone's already there. It worked for what we needed, and it was nice being able to use the shower. It's might be a bit far if you have mobile limitations, only the back door is open after the bar closes for the bathroom facilities and there are a few steps. If we're in the area we'd visit again and hope to be there on a day the restaurant is open.

Site 12 - Riverside RV Spot

This was a laid back and quirky camp site. It didn’t look like much upon pulling in, but we were pleasantly surprised to have electric hook ups that we didn’t expect per our reservation. There is a lovely creek (river?) a short walk from the campsites. We appreciated the laundry, shower and bathroom facilities. Don’t miss the goat cheese eggrolls at the bar. Best bar food ever!

Our experience was not very good. We were not met by the host as promised, and there was no formal office. The only ones around were the barmaids at the bar, and they just said go park wherever you want. We had reserved 12, but nothing was marked, so we just took a spot. The sites are pretty level gravel, but are littered with chunks of wood, and remnants of other campers (rags, 6 pack plastic, tooth pickers, and sheet metal screws). The place is also overgrown with weeds, and definitely needs some TLC. The sites are pretty close, but we essentially had the place to ourselves other than what appeared to be long term residents. We watched several campers pull in to a site, look around and leave. We did not find the bathrooms or laundry area until the second day, and it was tucked in a big red building where you had to walk through a bunch of junk and an overflowing trailer of trash that stunk to high heaven. The bathrooms were filthy and the garbage cans overflowing. We did attempt to do a load of laundry, but the machine quit halfway, so we ended up going to Pinedale to finish it. We did not eat at the bar. The menu did look good, but we just did our own grilling. There is also a swampy pond right next to the sites, and the mosquitoes at night were unreal, so sitting out was not going to happen. We are real easy going people and made the best out of it. We had a great view of the nearby hills and it was very peaceful.

Site 7 - Riverside RV Spot

Very simple place to camp. 30 and 50 amp service was great especially on the mornings when it was chilly. Easy to find, within 45 minutes of Jackson and the Tetons. The other campers appeared to be long term and only saw two other visitors stay while we were here. Good place to stop for a night or two.

Rustic but inexpensive with bar/res

Elkhorn Trading Post is the only electric RV site in the 20 mile Hogback pass leading into Jackson WY. The site is level and each site has electricity. It should always be available. It’s an old place that has cabins too. Some abandoned trailers and some old full time lessors. The restaurant has good burgers but I didn’t try any thing else. There’s a tavern that seems to generate most of the revenue. They have a shower and a washer and dryer for your use. The convenience store has limited supply but some. The owners and staff I found to be open and friendly. The place is not much to look at but it is right next to the Hogback River. There is a spigot for water in the front of the RV section. If you’re looking for esthetic niceties move on however it’s the cheapest option besides primitive camping which there are plenty of options for in the area. The Granite Springs Falls and Hot Spring’s are about a 30 minute drive. The Hogback River area is beautiful and the campground is 25 miles of beautiful scenery on the way to Jackson WY.

Everything was closed for Memorial Day Weekend (and we heard from someone that they are closed Mondays and Tuesdays in general) and we got no response from host. So don’t expect the variety of services advertised. The site itself was spartan but adequate. I think we were the only one night guest and the other sites were half occupied by permanent residents.

Site 14 - Riverside RV Spot

We were here two years ago and made a point to come back. Nice location for going off road in a jeep or 4-wheeler. Restaurant menu was limited but what they had was very good. The bartender, Edmund, was efficient, polite and nice to chat with. We will be back when we pass through again.

Most affordable camping within a reasonable distance of Grand Teton. Power hookups were great. Spots are a bit narrow but the place does not seem to be crowded generally so it's unlikely you'll have a neighbor on either side. Showers were great.

Website is Misleading

Site 9 - Riverside RV Spot

First, I rarely write reviews but I feel we were completely misled by the great website and pictures. The campground is completely unkept. The cabins appear to be long term rentals and are very cluttered and rundown. The grounds have not been maintained. Showers are unmarked in the back of the big red building, very difficult to locate. The gas station does not have pumps and the store was closed while we were there for our overnight stop. We could never locate the potable water to fill our tank. With regular maintenance and upkeep, this could be a pretty campground, as the view is decent. However, as it sits, I would not recommend.

Great stop for the Parks!

Site 9 - Riverside RV Spot

This unique slice of property was perfect for our needs. There is good 30 amp electric service at every rv site. Water available to fill your tank. No sewer hook up but I found a few dump stations not far away. The Hoback River is your backyard and the Tetons are so very close. It is just past a beautiful canyon and had a cool looking restaurant on property. I unfortunately did not get to eat there due to other obligations in my short stay. There is laundry facilities available and a restroom with showers in the main building. The sites are gravel and since snow season just ended the gravel was a little uneven but with hardly no effort I was balanced. It was so very peaceful. Ian and his wife were great at communicating. A beautiful 35 minute drive to Jackson where all the hustle and bustle is but here you can relax.

Great views of the valley! Campground was pretty empty which allowed for easier navigating and parking the trailer. Sites weren’t clearly marked and host said to park wherever. I fear if it was busier, then it would be a tighter fit. Site wasn’t big enough to allow a moderate trailer and long bed truck. Amenities such as showers, water, and trash weren’t clearly marked.

Ian is a super nice guy. His Elkhorn Saloon has great food and a friendly environment. The surrounding camp area in the back could use a some TLC. It has some areas that are junk yardish...abandoned and old vehicles.

No what we expected

Site 10 - Riverside RV Spot

This was not what we expected. The RV Park is an unkept parking lot with electric. The bathrooms with showers were decent but could use TLC located 200+ yards at the back of a bar/restaurant. In between the lot and the restaurant is a group of “cabins” most of which are inhabited by full time folks living in less than wholesome situations. We locked everything up. 1 washer and 1 dryer work. The description was a bit misleading.
