Native Americans made pipes out of a local plant.  That's why the area is called "Pipestem".  The Lilly family settled Summers County back in the 18th Century.  The New River was the inspiration for the novel "Follow The River" which is an account of a woman who was kidnapped by the Indians at taken to Ohio from whence she escaped later on and followed the river back home.
