Fort Liberty is a great jumping off place to explore all the awesome sites on San Juan. I loved how thoughtfully curated and private the camping sites were. When you first pull in, you'll check in by calling the number on the welcome board. The host on duty will meet you and show you to your site. There are a few 'car-camping' sites visible in the field when you pull in, but the best spots are tent sites nestled away in the woods. Each site has a bed of mulch for your tent to lay on, and an established fire ring. Fire wood can be purchased for $5/bundle. If you get too hot, the lake is a few steps away!
I believe this was the first year this site was operational, so they were understandably still figuring a few things out and building more sites. The location was beautiful and the directions were good. I think more and closer bathrooms are a good idea, and I think they will add the ability to drive up to the site at least to drop things off. We didn't really see the host, but when we did he gave us tips for a great swimming hole. Would definitely go again.
Ft. Liberty is a great camp ground. We loved being so close to the lake. We would definitely return if we decide to camp on San Juan Island again. The only issue was the port a potty’s were almost totally full.
Nice, quiet , secluded sites. Well established tent pads are nice but would be useful if they were a touch larger. Water is available but only at the office which, for the price, is inconvenient. Amount of dirt around for walk-in sites leaves you acutely aware of the lack of showers.
The pictures did deceive a bit. We enjoyed that our camp sites was private and had wood bark chips for designated tent spots. There was no one at the office until the weekend, and we did not have service to call the number on the sign. I think this place has great potential, but for the amenities offered, it is not worth the cost.
We loved staying here!! What a great place to get away to and a perfect spot to set up camp while exporing the island. Tad and his family were so helpful and accommodating, even giving us some fun ideas for things to do. The campsite is still relatively new so it’s a work in progress, but Tad is doing a fantastic job! We couldn’t find easy access to the lake, but we could see it from our site (6). I highly recommend staying here if you visit San Juan Island, great experience!
No water. no bathrooms. no host.
THIS CAMPGROUND IS NO LONGER MAINTAINED. NO WATER. NO BATHROOMS. We booked through HipCamp and got charged and a confirmation email. When we got to the campground, there was no one there, no bathrooms, no water. We asked a passing zip line van what the deal was, and the driver said that campground was shut down last year. No idea how this site is still listed on HipCamp. We will be contacting them immediately about this. Very dangerous experience for us getting to a camp with absolutely nothing.
