This Camp originally was a girls and boys camp. Started by Colonel Reynolds in 1947 every summer it was opened for campers from all over the United States. Coach Moore, of Sewanee, the University of the South, took over in the early 1980s. My husband Charles Kildgore, was a counselor in training in 1974. When it came up for sale we couldn't help but purchase it to reclaim the history of what it once was.

Camp Mountain Lakes is an intriguing campsite. What used to be a massive property for an old kids summer camp is now a relic of what once was. Charles and Cindy are the new owners of the property, and they are in the process of restoring much of the property for camping use by April 2018. They have already restored an old building into a beautiful cabin, so they are well on their way. I am writing this review in September 2017, and although I had a great time in my stay, it is clear that the finished product will have some added benefits to the current condition of the property. One thing that this property already has going strong is its prime location.

The old stables are the best camping spot right now, with a good amount of cleared and flat land. The ground here is very good for pitching a tent, and there are trees to hang hammocks on too. There is no formal fire-pit yet, but Charles was still kind enough to give us wood to build a fire on the damp grass. This allowed us to cook a great dinner, so long as we were careful to maintain a wet border of grass around the fire. Although there was a full moon on the night we stayed here, you could tell there is almost no light pollution in the area, and star-gazing here would be excellent.

After a good nights sleep, I drove three blocks to the nearby Grundy Lakes of South Cumberland State Park to watch the sunrise. There seemed to be a lot of fish feeding, and I wished I had brought a rod. The fog rose up off the lake on that cool morning, which was very scenic.

In addition to being close to several picturesque lakes, Camp Mountain Lake Retreats is also a stone's throw away from Foster Falls and the Fiery Gizzard trail, one of the top 25 backpacking trails in the country. Along with Stone Door and the Savage Gulf areas, there are over 55 miles of hiking trails within half an hour of Camp Mountain Lake Retreats. If hiking and/or waterfalls are your thing, you can have a great time staying in this part of Tennessee.

Overall, in just a short amount of time, this camp site should not only meet, but also exceed your camping needs. Right now it is essentially a drive-in campsite with backcountry amenities.

This was our first time here and wow. We brought our dog and with the fenced in area she was able to roam free and explore, which is a major plus.
The base camp actually had stocked firewood, 2 bathrooms with hot showers, sinks and toliets! Did not expect that! Also a 10 min walk to a lake and dock with a cute little playground and fishing!
The Host was amazing! We got there a day early and were the only campers, so we actually got a private tour and along the way we learned the history and area AND recieved fresh picked basil and some squash from their gardens (which we used that night with our fish and zucchini 😍) It was amazing. Great communication with the hosts, clean sites and amenities and plenty to do.
Give them a try!!!

We had a great time staying at Camp Mountain Lake.
The hosts are very friendly and helpful. The camp is a short walk/drive to the lake and is fenced in for security. There are two bathrooms and showers with HOT water, these are well lit at night with sensor lights. The tent pads have luscious green grass with no rocks or sticks, which was a pleasant surprise!
If you are a nature lover this is an ideal spot for a family camp, or even by yourself to just get away.

Camp Mountain Lake is perfectly situated in Tracy City making for an easy drive to Fiery gizzard, Foster Falls, Sewanee etc and a short walk to beautiful lake.

You can pitch your tent in the field or camp under the stables where there are newly build wooden platforms. There are working bathrooms, potable water, and electricity. Overall it was an extremely comfortable and convenient place to camp.

Every accommodation met! They are building something beautiful there. I can't wait to see the final product. Within walking distance of Grundy Lakes and the swimming docks. I regret not bringing my pole based on the size of the catfish I saw! We can't wait to go back.

We had a fantastic time. Property was beautiful and private. We swam in the lake everyday, went and saw all the waterfalls... we will be back. Best part was the bathrooms on site, clean with a great hot shower.

The only thing I was surprised by how close the camp sites were to each other and the road. The camping is not on the main land of the old children’s camps, it’s across the street on the side of a road. And the firewood was wet with no dry kindling. The bathrooms were nice and the road wasn’t too busy. The lake was walking close and the foster falls were a quick 5 min. Away. the bathrooms were convenient. It just wasn’t primitive enough for us.

Great communication with the hosts, clean and well stocked bathrooms and camp site. Easy access to trails, parks, and the local town. Bathrooms and hot showers on site. Secure locked campground fully surrounded by a pet-friendly fence. Supplied firewood, sand pads and firepits at each site. Coved lit shelters with electrical jacks available for use. A bit close to a small road. Loved our stay and will be back with family and friends!
