*Open for Labor Day*
This historic park is nestled in a valley between two mountains. It is very shaded and we have the perfect temperatures (70-72) even though you are camping in August. We strive to make you feel like one of the family. There are fishing trout ponds and 20 miles in either direction we have anice little towns with gift shops, restaurants, nearby!
The park is level, which is unusual in the mountains. Lots of trees!
This is one of the most historic peaceful, relaxing camping locations in North Carolina!

Beautiful area, amenities and activities were not quite what was listed. The camp buildings were abandoned and run down. There were portapotties available but not all of them locked. There was a creek and a very small pond that was definately not the lake pictured. There are lakes nearby within a 20 minute drive. The hiking was good. We hiked all the way up a very clear path/road up to the top of the mountain. Did not have much of a view but the trail branched off toward the top so maybe we went a different way. This campsite has a lot of potential and the area is absolutely gorgeous.
For not having been open in years the site was very nice. They have plans to get the showers and bathrooms working when that is done this will be a great site. My only criticism would be that the sites were somewhat close together. If you are in an rv that shouldn't be an issue but with tents it is nicer to have more space. I look forward to seeing the site after the improvements.
I was told there was a new, better campsite available, but the coordinates I received did not lead me to a campsite and Bear Trail was unresponsive to calls and messages.
The hosts were wonderful and helpful and provided a great spot! The electric hook up and water available was an added bonus! Our favorite part was the most picture perfect creek that adjoined our camp spot. We will for sure be back!
Terry is one of the most down to earth, hard working, calm, engaging, and personable people I have ever met. You could tell just how much blood, sweat, and effort he, his family, and his neighbors put into getting that camp back into a condition that was more than just "presentable" after being neglected for over 10 years. We had an incredible experience and would recommend Bear Trail Cabins in a heartbeat.
