We drove into Star Dance right after a small rainstorm had passed through, only to be greeted by a rainbow and our wonderful host! We were showed around the property, told about the different camp spots available and then left to explore.
We chose the campsite on the smooth rocks near the cliff, we had the most amazing views. It was only a short walk from where we parked, make sure you bring your stuff neatly packed so you can carry it to whichever site you choose!
There was a coffee + water bar at the camp, as well as a kitchen. The kitchen had running water, a stove, pots and pans, utensils, drinkable water, and a refrigerator. It was awesome to be able to cook in this little kitchen while here.
The bathrooms were extremely clean, very nice - 5 stars. They had electricity and plugs in (where I left my phone to charge over night).
The shower was this super cute outdoor shower (with a view) - it was large and roomy, had hot water, a bench to sit on.
There is no light pollution out here at night. We hung out in the jacuzzi Saturday night with amazing views of the Milky Way and watched the Perseid Meteor shower.
Our hosts had also told us about a walking trail that we could go on if we wanted to, but we opted out and decided to do yoga and meditate in the yoga yurt instead.
The hosts also have a horse, who LOVES apples, so bring an apple or two to feed to the horse and he will be the happiest.
Lake Abiquiu and the dam are right down the road from the property, so if you stayed for a long period of time at the camp, this is a lovely spot to stop and see as well.
Overall, our time at the Star dance was relaxing, fun, and memorable. We will definitely be coming back.
I stayed somewhere else in New Mexico after my last review but I had a few extra days and decided to go back to Abiquiu. Again, I was moved by Tate site’s special beauty and hope it is visited by only the most caring and nature loving of guests. I saw ~20 desert blue jays (is that what they were?) fly past me one by one in 5 minutes.
Great balance of camping and amenities. Super clean full bathrooms, an outdoor walled shower. So refreshing! A full kitchen is available too. The night sky is worth the price of admission alone. Perfect economical place to spend a few days and explore the surrounding area including Ghost Ranch (20 mins away).
If you’re thinking about coming to Star Dance, do it! It completely exceeded my expectations. The site is very clean and well kept, and the view is just stunning. I did not expect them to have a shower, full kitchen, fridge, and bathroom. Everything we needed, they took care of. The men who manage the property were very kind to us and made us feel welcome. Overall, it was a great experience. We got to hike, camp, look at the stars, and do yoga in the yoga yurt. We will definitely be coming back!
Eric was a super friendly host! He met us as soon as we arrived, gave us a tour of the grounds and pointed to areas to explore for us to pick our campsite for the night as well as where we could hike (which I believe he said was about a 3 hour trip in and out we didn't do the full hike this time) We hung out and talked for about 20 minutes or so and he said we could reach out to him at any time during our stay.
I believe the property is about 30 acres total. There are well marked trails that lead back to the main property where you will find two very clean and roomy bathrooms with running water, private outdoor showers, a full kitchen where you can cook or store your food in the fridge, outdoor table and chairs, drinking water, a coffee pot, a hot tub and a yoga yurt. There are also marked trails that lead to the campsites (but bring your flashlights, there are no lights as to not disturb the amazing view of stars at night). It's an extremely quiet, clean and peaceful area. We camped maybe 10 feet from a cliff and the best part was just sitting for hours on the warm rocks overlooking the amazing view. There are more stars than you have ever seen at night and zero light pollution. Lots of birds and curious humming birds, the occasional lizard, crickets chirping at night, bats, coyotes down in the canyon and an owl-those were the only sounds we heard. I am not a big camper, I liked that this was the perfect combination of feeling like you are in the middle of nowhere but being able to walk for 5 minutes and have a bathroom and other amenities. There is no Wi-Fi but if you have Verizon you can likely get a call in and out if you need to as well as some texts. All in all I didn't use my phone other than to take about 50 amazing photos during my stay, so it felt like the perfect calm getaway. I can't wait to go back!
I had a fantastic time at Star Dance. Was on a spontaneous road trip without any camping gear but wanted to see and spend a night in the desert. Eric brought to my attention that there are yurds with beds in them that cost a little extra, and this was just what I needed. 5 stars out of 5 as a review, a million stars to gaze at during the night...
