The Bunkhouse at Big Red Stables
Beautiful and Peaceful Get-Away
Who knew Harrodsburg, Kentucky had so much to offer? This was our first time using HipCamp. My husband and I usually go tent camping over long holiday weekends, but this year we are both now in our fifties and no longer wish to sleep on the ground. Additionally, my husband had to work the Friday after July 4th, so we needed to stay somewhere close to Louisville so that he could go to work and then return to our mini-vacay. Lastly, we were planning this at the last minute. Tall order. We weren't able to stay at the "Bunkhouse" but Emily of Big Red Stables also owns a stone cottage on the same property and asked if we'd be interested in this alternative.
As soon as we arrived, Emily drove over to greet us and let us know about a couple of things we might enjoy doing in the area. Terrific lady. So gracious and hospitable.
The cottage was just recently renovated – we were only the 2nd couple to stay here - so it had modern appliances in the kitchen, and new paint and flooring throughout. Currently, the downstairs was finished but the upstairs had not yet been furnished.
Downstairs we had use of a fully supplied kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, full-sized fridge, electric stove/oven, cookware and dishes. There is also a small dining space that seats four. Nice sized living room. Two bedrooms and a nice sized bathroom with shower and tub. One bedroom had an antique wardrobe, a nice-sized closet, and a full sized bed with quilt and linens. The other bedroom had two twin-sized beds. The décor is country chic. Very clean and neat.
Outside we had the use of a brick patio with wrought iron table and chairs, charcoal grill, and a fire pit. Good sized yard in back and front. Back and both sides of the house have beautiful views of the rolling hills on this 200-acre horse farm, and up close and personal interaction with some of the horses.
From what I could tell there wasn’t a stereo system or TV, but Emily gave us the WiFi password that we really never used. We came here to get away from electronics so we were quite content. Very quiet and peaceful.
During our stay we enjoyed: meals at a multitude of local restaurants including the Old Owl Tavern, The Fudge Shop, Grannie’s Diner; we visited Fort Harrod; Black Watch Alpacas; Lemon Mills Brewery; Wild Side Winery; and boating on Lake Herrington.
On the farm, my husband and I cooked out, fished in a well-filled pond, and of course went horseback riding.
We had so much fun we are returning for Labor Day weekend. Emily and her husband were such friendly and fantastic hosts that went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed for our stay, and plenty of ideas for exploring Harrodsburg. Everywhere we went the locals knew who Emily and her husband were, and bragged about what wonderful people they are.
