What makes a good Hipcamp Extra?

We’re so excited you’ve decided to add Extras to your Hipcamper’s experience. This feature allows Hosts to offer Hipcampers something extra for an additional fee when they make a booking—you can learn more about how to set one up here. To help ensure Hosts are delivering the high-quality activities and goods Hipcampers expect, we’ve put together guidelines on what does and does not qualify as an Extra.

When it comes to activities, an Extra should be something the Hipcamper couldn’t easily do on their own while on your property. Here are some things you must consider if you’re offering an Extra —

Property orientation and check-in do not qualify as tours or activities.

We love that you’re providing a warm welcome to Hipcampers, but showing them where facilities are or reviewing property guidelines does not qualify as a tour. We hope you’ll continue to provide this essential information to each new guest.

Unguided access to existing features on the property does not qualify as a tour or activity.

When Hipcampers stay at your beautiful land, they are expecting to use trails and viewpoints without extra charge. If you are not providing at least 30 minutes of a guided tour covering specific topics, it probably won’t qualify as a tour.

Charging for a “choose your own tour” is not supported at this time.

Because campers are learning about your land for the first time, you are the best person to specify a detailed itinerary of what topics and features the tour will cover. This will also make campers more likely to add it to their purchase.

Hipcamp Insurance does not cover certain activities, but you’re still welcome to offer them.

Our insurance only covers you for on-property activities, so anything taking place off your property will not be covered. Additionally, the following activities on-property are not covered:

— Alcohol purchases
— Weapon use or hunting
— Operating mobile equipment or machinery (ATVs, tractors)
— Rock climbing

Here are your options:
1. Keep the Extra activity as-is, but know that it is not covered by the Hipcamp Insurance Policy. We recommend you have an alternative insurance in place for the activity.
2. Remove the Extra activity, and add one that is covered by the Hipcamp Insurance Policy.


What type of Extra is most likely to be purchased by campers?

We’ve compiled some tips on creating the most sellable Extra possible. Check them out below.

Be specific about what the tour covers, the itinerary, and why it’s special.

It’s important to be very specific about what your tour is covering. Why should the camper be interested in taking this tour? What can they expect to see, do, and learn while on the tour? Will campers get any hands-on experiences, such as foraging, potting a plant, milking a cow, tasting vegetables? What makes you uniquely qualified to give this special tour?

Clearly specify the following:
— How long the tour will be
— Method of transportation (walk, vehicle, horseback, boat, etc.)
— Detailed itinerary and distance covered (if applicable)
— Detailed breakdown of topics, features, activities, or processes covered
— Why you’re qualified to lead this tour

Give your tour an interesting name.

The tour title is the first thing campers see, so try to make it enticing and clear. Here are some examples of great tour names:
— Wild Foraging Horseback Tour
— Beekeeping 101
— Guided 3-Mile Forest Loop Hike
— Herbal Soap-making in a Meadow

Here are some styles of names to avoid:
— See what happens here
— Sightseeing
— Sean’s Hike
— Property Tour / Camp Tour / Farm Tour

Set reasonable prices.

You know the value of your unique tour best, but we’ve found that pricing tours affordably is more likely to attract campers. As you perfect and add to your tour from camper feedback, you can experiment with increasing your tour price.
