*Lakefront*

Book this huge two tiered site for both a big open area as well as a lakefront. Park up on top then walk down a small hill into the shady trees in front of the lake. Take out a few boats to the raft in the middle of the lake or enjoy a quite night on the lake with a crackling fire.

Deep in the backwoods of rural Wisconsin, Camp Escape is an excellent spot to disconnect with the 21st century and get completely off grid. At this camp, a handful of secluded sites each come with spectacular lakeside views and shelter from pine trees for complete isolation.

Here’s a chance to test your wilderness skills. There’s 70 acres of private forest and four kettle lakes at your disposal, so getting to know your surroundings must be top of the list. You can potter around on the water in rowing boats and canoes (both free for campers to use) and fish for bass to grill over your campfire. Kids can safely run off energy, make new friends at the play areas, or go scavenging for raspberries in season.

Beyond camp, there’s a whole wilderness of 5,000 acres just begging to be explored; take a backpack and hike or horseback ride into the forest, or rent an ATV or snowmobile for winter adventures in the hills. At the end of the day, though, there’s probably nothing better than sitting on a wooden dock overlooking a lake and contemplating the wilderness as the sun sets.

No-fuss amenities at this back-to-nature campground include fire rings, wooden tables, and parking by each site. Gas cylinders are available, but there’s no drinking water so you'll need to bring your own. There’s one compostable toilet on the park as well as plenty of dirt (and trees to hide behind) for catholes.

My boyfriend and I loved camping out in my tent on the shores of the lake at the underbelly!

Tara was very responsive and clear on how to get to the property.

We parked our car near the outhouse (nicest one I’ve ever used!) and we brought our camping gear down the hill. It’s about a 100 feet or so. There was a high top glass picnic table and two plastic deck chairs near the fire ring. There were two trees that were great for a hammock. There’s a clothesline with a few clothespins and an area where you can put firewood.

She offered a lot of awesome add ons like fresh eggs, honey, maple syrup, worms and fishing poles. They were all laid out when we arrived. We also paid for the UTV tour around the property— this was a great way to learn about the history of the land and see the whole area and disc golf course.

Finally, the kayaks and paddle boat was a quick drive from our site and we were able to spend some time on the lake.

We had a great weekend and enjoyed the peace and solitude. At night you can see the stars very clearly at the top of the underbelly and after dark it’s very quiet. In the morning you’re woken up to a symphony of birds.

We also ventured outside the site to a public hiking trail- the glacier path— it was also beautiful. You can find it on the AllTrails app.

Don’t forget bug spray and hydrocortisone cream for the mosquitos. Also, the lower level gets pretty chilly at night so bring layers and a hat!

We loved Tara’s property! It was beautiful and the Underbelly site was perfect for what we needed. The lower tier was amazing with the fire pit overlooking the water and the upper tier was great for our pop up camper. Tara stopped by to say hello and was super welcoming. Each site was far from others and allowed for enough privacy 😊

This was the perfect place for me, my husband, and our dog to get away for a weekend of relaxation. We camped in an SUV tent on the upper tier and spent most of our days by the fire on the lower tier by the lake. The kayaks were only a short walk from the site which was also nice. 10/10 recommend.

Camp Escape is a peaceful, gorgeous place to get away! The Underbellly felt completely private and was so beautiful! Loved being right on the lake. Only drawback to this site is the hike down a hill to reach it. The bottom portion is kind of steep when you’re making repeated trips with gear (I’m a solo camper so I was really tired by the time I got everything either down or up.). Tara was a great host, and the UTV tour is a must do! I’ll definitely be back to Camp Escape, but will probably pick a different site.

We had a great time. We checked out the other sites, but liked ours the best. The Woods was a close 2nd. The Underbelly is a great campsite with steep access - you'll carry your gear the last 100 feet. But you can paddle right from the site. Firewood is available. And at night you can watch the stunning night sky at the upper level. Tara is a great host, she takes pride in her land and is improving the sites with care.

Camp Escape: The Underbelly!

We had the adventure of our lives camping at Camp Escape: The Underbelly.

When we arrived, Tara met us on her four wheeler and led us to our camp. We had a an amazing two tiered campsite. The top tier was leveled off with a fire ring and a beautiful glass table. Follow the path to the right and down the hill, and you’ll find your amazing campsite next to the lake. We brought both of our young boys and the site got rained out (and then some), but we made it work. Had a great time. Highly recommend Tara’s property as long as you’re prepared for an authentic north woods camping experience ☺️ Thanks Tara!

Loved our stay at The Underbelly site! Was very peaceful & quiet. The shade that was provided by the natural canopy of trees was very helpful. There were other campers on the property but everyone has their own space and privacy so it really felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. After going for a hike we scouted a few of the other sites that we definitely want to come back and visit.

Great place to boondock in our teardrop. The lakeside spot is a short walk from where you can set up a camper. The camper access area is not next to the lake, but it gets great sun for all your solar needs. Great host and experience!
