Nestled between Virginia Tech University (Blacksburg, VA) and Bristol Motor Speedway is a historical family farm 15 minutes from route 81. New River Trail State Park is 3.5 miles from the family farm, so bring the kayaks and canoes and enjoy the New River and the surrounding area of Southwest Virginia!

As you turn off of the county road (607) you will find yourself at the classic red farm gate of Periwinkle Branch Family Farm. This Southwest Virginia farm was once an iron mining farm. During your private stay, you will find old historical farming equipment hidden amongst the landscape and even old mining buildings ("rock huts" now toppled over but once was part of the operation...see if you can find them!) The neighbors and family have between 30-50 Black Angus cows that you will see grazing the 30 acres of rolling pasture. You may camp wherever you like! I recommend on the hill behind the 100-year-old farmhouse, right before the 30 acres of wooded hiking, or by the spring house. You will see turkeys, deer, and other amazing creatures as you walk the pasture and woods. Follow the natural spring up the mountain and try to catch a glimpse of Perwinkle Mountain and the beautiful landscape of Southwest Virginia.

It was very primitive and absolutely beautiful. Loved the sunset, stars, and friendly cows.

We only had a sedan but we recommend a four wheeler or truck to explore the property with!

This farm was a beautiful location for a secluded weekend getaway. The only thing I would recommend is having an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle. You can get to parts of the pasture without one, but we chose a secluded place and my friend had trouble getting back up the hill in her Ford Focus, but she made it. Other than that, it was lovely!

Really beautiful space, nice views, plenty of choices for setup and easy to get to near the new river trail. The cows do get curious but it made for a really neat experience.

I camped by the farmhouse and don't know if it happens every night but neighbors dog seemed to bark alot, thru the night. don't know if it was memoving etc. I'm guessing by the water house or further up the hill would be good

About the cows-I was sitting in the pasture reading and the cows were looking at me from a distance. I started whistling like I had seen in a few YouTube videos and some cows started coming over. I switched to singing and after a few minutes I had fifteen cows around. Some just a few feet away.

Peaceful and extremely scenic. There are cows grazing but they left us alone. If you’re not comfortable being close to cows I’d stay somewhere else. Otherwise, this is a fantastic camping spot.

Thanks so much Cory for allowing us to experience the beauty of the Shenandoah on your farm. To be able to sit by a fire under the stars surrounded by the rolling hills was so special, only to be topped by a visit from the herd in the morning who were very curious about who we were. I sat with my morning coffee delighted by the attention. I even think I got a cow kiss! We loved our visit and thank you. Michelle & Alex

The cows may be free roaming but they are skittish to people and thus just another part of some truly beautiful scenery. Highlights of my stay were nearly complete seclusion (one visible neighbor), and my dog licking a cows nose!
I recommend camping behind the farmhouse, especially if you don’t have a truck/4wd; The way to the pasture has not been maintained in some time, plus there are cow pies.
While the view was a better view in the pasture, It took an hour to cover the local ones with dirt so my dog/the flies would move on. After the rain the dog was tracking that stuff so dog owners be aware.
