This spot is amazing! Truly a gem.
I stayed here with my 72 year old mom for 4 nights and it was exactly what we were looking for. Quite, peaceful, beautiful surroundings for gazing either day or night. Short walks on the property were nice, and more challenging hikes within 10 minute drive (Mt Ascutney, Little Ascutney and river walk).
The cabin was a fantastic upgrade to our typical tent/lean-to camping style and it had absolutely everything we needed. The water jugs that John had waiting for us were very helpful. The indoor fire place was dreamy, and the 2-burner stove top was appreciated and used more than we anticipated.
John was a very respectful host. He checked on us during our stay to make sure we felt comfortable in the cabin and with it's many uses.
The view from the cabin was incredibly and the environment was very peaceful. The fireflies were out in full force during our stay, which my mom enjoyed tremendously. We were lucky to have the biting insects at bay during our stay (mid-late June). My mom did have a challenging time with the rough terrain around the site and to the outhouse. This was exactly the setting we were looking for, AND this is not the typical state campsite with paved roads to the bathrooms and hand raked flat campsites. A person with limited sight and ability may find this site challenging. Thankful John had ski/walking poles sitting in the cabin and my mom was able to modify her steps with their aid.
We would excitedly visit again.
This is a beautiful spot. As a single dad, I was nervous about bringing my 3 kids(all 8 and under) to a cabin in the woods with no electricity but they had a blast! It was really nice to unplug and connect with the kids. The owner (John) offered up the pond behind his house for swimming and there are some beautiful swimming/fishing spots just a short drive away. At night we enjoyed a stunning sunset over the mountains and a great show of fireflies to finish the night.

Beautiful view, secluded with great wood stove that can make the inside even cozier. We would definitely go back.
We had a great time camping at John's, and we'll absolutely be back! The cabin is well-equipped, the view is beautiful, and the pups had so much fun in the pond.
This was one of the nicest hip camp location we have ever been to. Upon arrival, we drove up to very well treated land and continued up the hill and through the trees until we reached the beautiful cabin with a view.
Cabin: 9/10. Cabin was clean and equipped with everything one could ever need. Forgot cooking supplies? They've got it on the cabin. Don't want to grill outside? They have a camp stove set up inside for ya. Get cold at night? There are extra sheets and sleeping bags in what you brought was not enough. Bored? There are a lot of games, coloring, chalk, etc. to entertain your hearts desire. I loved waking up to the trees outside and hearing the birds chirping. If it weren't for the pesty ant (termite?) invasion I would absolutely give it a 10/10 but I'm terrified of any sort of flying insect near where I sleep so it gets a 9.
Outdoor space: 11/10. The fire pit and bench were well taken care of. We did bring our own firewood picked up locally but when we ran out we were able to purchase some slabs for $5 a wagonload which was nice. If you visit in the warmer months, bring a canopy or you will be outside in the full sun (which is wonderful for folks that want to tan). We also visited the pond which was refreshing and nice. Overall loved spending time outside the cabin this weekend.
View: 12/10. No description needed. It's like a painting and at night just look up at the stars.
We will definitely recommend this listing to our friends!
Amazing place to get away! Great view, well accommodated, and very friendly. Will definitely recommend!
We had a great stay at the Green Mountain Retreat! Beautiful views, good swimming in the pond, and lots of great hiking in the area. The cabin was simple and comfortable. We had everything we needed and the hosts were also very nice :-)
Beautiful views in a really special, perfectly simple cabin. My partner and I enjoyed games and tending to the fire while breathing in all the fresh air. Our dog was living her best life roaming and sniffing and playing in the snow. Access to towns and trails and much more nearby. John was super kind. The only thing we'd change is that we could've stayed longer. Will be back (again) soon!
