The Desert Moon has been serving the greater Moab area since the coal mining days of the mid 1930's. Thompson Springs began as a railroad stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in the mid to late 1800's. It soon became a shipping point and community center for local farmers, cattle ranchers and sheepherders.  It is now a ghost-town with a population of 50 people. The Pacific Union Railroad is right across the street with trains passing by around 5 times per day.

There are 10 staff members living on site in their RV's. We are always working on projects around the property, feel free to come say hello at any time!

Pros- 30 mins from Arches and Moab. Big camping spot for car and gear. Warm showers and running toilets/water, relatively clean bestrooms minus the giant grasshoppers. Cute decor/artwork. Table and chairs at each site. Easy to find and drive to. Host had great communication on messages and picked up phone right away when I called upon arrival.

Cons- the train is across the street and SO LOUD especially at 3am. Guests were chatting and playing music after 10 with lights on. Glass and tons of ants all over our campsite. Random dogs wandering around. Limited views. Property surrounded by RVs and junkyard stuff.

Fine for a one night stay and shower. But most likely wouldn’t return.

Desert Moon has a great location in a charming and quiet area. The camping spots are spacious, accessible, and beautifully lit with fairy lights.

Unfortunately this campsite comes up as being close to Arches National Park but that's not the case, it's more 40 miles away. The camping site are just okay with not alot of shade to be gotten. But if you really like flies, dirt and no shade; this is the place for you. It's not the owners fault just the environment there. They have workable restroom facilities and fresh water. I'd this site is good for a last minute campsite but that's all.

Looks kinda sus at first because the buildings there are old. However, I recommend this place. Shower and bathroom are clean and plenty of hot water.

We knew we were expecting a bit of an unorthodox setting but I expected something more quirky and less haphazard. Strong junkyard vibes here. It’s easy to find and the directions are clear, though. Unfortunately, it was super windy when we arrived- dust was blowing like crazy, and there’s no real shelter from the wind. We waited to get out of the car for a bit and saw two different people, apparently from the campground/inn, and nobody came to greet us or welcome us. The lack of communication or welcome didn’t contribute to the overall discomfort. We tried mightily to set up our tent but it was so windy, and so uncomfortable, we just gave up. It might have felt different if someone could have put it in context or at least we didn’t feel like we were in it alone.

Nice little artistic venue. Bathrooms were clean and it was easy. Close to the freeway.

Eclectic is the closest term to describe Desert Moon. Easy access to five tent sites. Overall quiet neighborhood with the small exception of passenger and freight trains throughout the day and night. All within 100 yards of the campground. Amenities are sufficient to make the stay comfortable. There is a 7-11 within a mile.

Super awesome little sight. We didn’t have any officially check in which was really perfect since we came at 1am from going through the national parks. Bathroom was super clean with pretty paintings as well. Highly recommend. Also if you’re looking for stars.... OH MAN!!

Desert moon was great! We were there for 2 nights and both were great. The land is a little rocky (to be expected) so I would recommend a mallet to get stakes in if you’re in tents. It’s pretty close to the highway but you can’t hear it at all. Bathrooms and shower were clean and well-stocked. Great site and good access to Moab and the parks without being crowded!
