If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
We had a great time camping at The Sticks! A recent storm had washed out the little bridge but we were able to get our stuff across without issue. So nice to be able to walk out into the river and set your chairs in just a few inches of water—and to easily walk out to deeper water. Would definitely recommend booking the whole island!
Best river spot camping in austin!
We absolutely loved our stay at the sticks! Let’s get the cons out of the way: 1. There was no fire barrel or picnic table on the island, even though it was advertised and pictures that there would be. HOWEVER, there was a huge storm that flooded the island the weekend before so I think these items were washed away. 2. There’s no place for a hammock. Not really the hosts fault, but they could clear some of the brush or put up posts or something. The only reason I list this as a con, is because it’s literally the only other thing that could’ve made this site better.
Now for all the pros! The water access is perfect. We had three dogs with us and they loved having the shallow water to swim and fish and lay in. Renting the whole island meant we never had to worry about if they were bothering anyone else because we were the only ones on the island. The hosts were great! They accommodated us when we needed extra parking, and they let us know when they were making an H-E-B run (a 40+ minute drive round trip) and picked up the little things we forgot! We walked up river as far as we were could before we got tired, and then floated on tubes until we were a shot walk from our camp. We really enjoyed this, but looking back I wish I would’ve just went ahead and paid for the float trip the hosts offered. Also, we all did breakfast boxes and were SO impressed but what all it included! Hot coffee with creamer even! Tacos, fresh fruit, and beans with salsa! We didn’t like the corn tortillas very much, but we didn’t ask for flour so I can’t blame them for that. Over all, we had such a fun and relaxing trip. Waking up with the sun, and sitting in chairs with the water and dozing off as fishermen and kayakers occasionally came by, it was perfect! Again, if only I could’ve been napping in a hammock, I might’ve never left!! But on top of everything else that already made it so great, we ended up deciding to leave Saturday night instead of Sunday morning. We let the hosts know, only so that they could clean up the breakfast stuff, and they refunded us for Saturday night! Even though we left 8+ hours after what a check out time would’ve been! They were so incredibly kind! Watch the video before you stay. Other commenters that were negative about the walk or the bridge, must not have watched the video or read the description well. Yes the walk was rough with the cooler, but besides that it was fine. And the bridge didn’t bother us in the slightest. We were going to camp on an island so we had in water shoes and were expecting to get our feet wet. I don’t know why anyone else would feel differently. But overall, we LOVED it! And will definitely be staying again!
Peaceful river oasis w/ good vibes.
Such a quiet and peaceful scene. Woke up to the sound of the river right outside our tent. Hosts were also soooo soooo helpful with recommendations on nearby area, extra water, anything else we needed to enjoy our time. Highly recommend, will be back!
Whole island country primitive camp
Renting the whole island is the way to go! So much private space to relax by the flowing river. A few reminders, walking down to the site is a trek across a stream with water flowing over concrete stepping blocks so wear appropriate shoes. There is not any drinking water or bathrooms so plan for that. We didn’t catch any fish but apparently you just need to go to the other side of the island. Just know this is primitive country camping and you will enjoy every moment!!!!
The Whole Dang Island is an ideal location right outside of the city. I highly recommend renting all the campsites as it will give you plenty of space to spread out tents and offer lots of access to the water for all. Especially during the pandemic, having the whole island provided plenty of privacy and felt very safe. Our hosts were always quick to respond and help in anyway needed! One word of caution, bring water shoes as there is one section where you will need to cross a shallow stream in order to reach the sites on the water. Thanks for such a great stay and we will definitely be back!!
