Welcome to the Cibolo Gardens Wildlife Preserve! Just 22 miles from downtown San Antonio, not far off of US 281, our educational homestead is an excellent place to camp.

Covid19 has presented a challenge for all of us in becoming hyper-aware of the need for doing everything we can to stop the spread of the Cornavirus.  Part of that effort has been staying in place for the past two months and we did our part by closing up to guests during that time.  Although we are still vigilant about sanitizing surfaces and having guest guidelines for safe-distancing while staying with us, we believe that it's time and safe to open up with this new paradigm in mind.  There is such a strong need right now for people to get out of the house and do so responsibly.  Spending time outside in nature and in a safe environment is one of the best ways to do that and we want to offer a comfortable space for that.

We have two wooded areas where you can put up your tent or hammock. The north grove, adjacent to parking, offers quick access to the compost toilet, outdoor shower, rainwater filter, electricity, and wi-fi. From here, you are certain to see a chicken or two cluck by.  For a bit more seclusion, the south grove edges up to a cliff, where you can view the most spectacular sunsets. This is where the deer and rabbits like to hang out. You can drive to the site to unload or load your gear. Both areas can host up to 12 tents.  We do ask that you please plan on checking in before 8pm or sunset, whichever comes first.

Feel free to simply relax in the shade of the persimmon and juniper trees. Or, to add some activity to your stay, hike the varying terrain on our 45 acres, hunt for fossils in the dry creek bed, break out your tree & plant id books, or watch the wildlife (even if it’s just the chickens).  Refresh by taking a dip in the above ground pool, or wash off in the outdoor cob shower.  [Please be advised that besides campers, we also host homesteading, wilderness survival, gun safety & herbal medicine classes on our site.  So, do expect company, but you'll definitely have room for privacy. ]

If you want to explore more Hill Country, nearby attractions for outdoor fun include the Guadalupe River State Park (16mi) or Natural Bridge Cavern (17mi).

The host has lied about the conditions that will allow us to access the side.
Due to a large rain, the creek on the way to the campsite has blocked the road.
The host knew about the conditions and instead of offering us a refund in the morning so we could make alternate plans, kept insisting that the campsite will be accessible. In the end, he gave us a refund at 7:30 pm after we waited for several hours for the campsite to become accessible. As a result we had no place to spend the night.

Anastasia – thank you for the feedback. It sounds like you didn’t have the experience here at Cibolo Gardens that you were expecting. For that, we apologize and we’re taking your criticisms to heart in updating our procedure when inclement weather affects the entrance into our property. I assure you that your safety was our chief concern in providing our periodic reports of the flood status and our opinion of when we it would be safe to cross the normally dry creek near our entrance. As hard as we tried to predict when it would be safe, with all the factors affecting the water receding, we just failed in that prediction and rather than encourage and help you to find alternative accommodations earlier in the day, we tried to wait it out with you for far too long into the evening. For that we apologize and we will do better in the future. I did reach out to you privately and offered a free night’s stay at our campground in hopes that it will help to show our sincere interest in trying to make it right for you. I hope that helps and we hope you give us another try . As to our communication with you, Anastasia, it sounds like we dropped the ball and you deserved better than that. Since it’s such a rarity for flooding to affect our ability to enter/ exit the property beyond an hour’s time, we obviously weren’t prepared for offering you the best options for your family in the case of a prolonged blocked entrance and on a holiday weekend. I hope you’ll come back to see us and give us another opportunity to exceed your expectations, which is our goal.

I would definitely recommend Cibolo Gardens Nature Preserve! It is a quick drive outside of San Antonio and still maintains the natural feel of camping. I am excited for all of the plans the preserve has for its future and will be visiting again soon!

This is a great place for people looking for a campsite with full amenities (shower, toilet, open kitchen with a stove, oven, fridge, sinks, and even an above-ground swimming pool). It's particularly good if you're a hammock camper as there are plenty of good spots among the cedar trees. They do have chickens (and a rooster or two!) so the morning can be a little noisy. The hosts are absolutely fantastic and will do everything in their power to make the stay great. I wished I would have had time to go on the fossil hunt they offer.

We had a great time at the site. Only 20 minutes north of San Antonio, you turn off the highway and are transported into the wild.

The area is well maintained, with soft ground, a dedicated fire pit, stocked outdoor kitchen, showers, water, and toilet. It's not quite as remote as I expected - proximity to the highway results in road noise at night and campsites are all relatively close together so you can see any other campers. But, there's enough space to spread out.

That said, I highly recommend this location for a quick trip and a well-maintained site.
