As the moon blocks out the sun during a solar eclipse, it casts a shadow on the surface of the Earth. Over the course of an eclipse, this shadow moves in a line across the Earth. The path of totality is the area in which the moon totally blocks out the sun during a total solar eclipse.
The best views of a total solar eclipse are from within the path of totality. Outside of this path, the sun will still be partially eclipsed, but will not provide the stunning view that a total solar eclipse gives. Even when the sun is 99% covered by the moon, the view is not nearly as impressive since the sun's corona is not visible, so it's best to be within the path of totality.
