It took seven years to carve this winding trail and two-level scenic campsite into the wooded hill behind my home. Now completed, I feel inspired to share their solitude and beauty with others who will appreciate it. From the top of a steep drive, a brief but precipitous hike leads you high up very quickly through a mature forest to some steps that lead the first of two camping locations leveled within clefts of rocks forming a pair of overlooks. A soft, level campsite awaits you there under a canopy of trees where you will find everything you'll need for a small-scale forest outing.
The lower level either stands alone (1-2 persons) or serves as a base camp for the Northwest Expansion area (3-5 persons) a very short hike away. The expansion features a roomy 13 x 15ft groomed tenting surface, a stone fire ring with steel fire pit, and plenty of extra space to spread out. It provides an additional layer of privacy and a (leaf-permitting) northwest view that usually includes a sunset.
[Note: A booking of 3 or more campers reserves both the original lower level and the upper Northwest Expansion camping areas. Keep in mind that the technical nature of the trail to reach the upper level makes it unsuitable for children under 10 years old.]
Hundreds of feet away, there are a few homes residing below the camps, but you are high enough above the world below to enjoy a sense of separation from it. Were these camping areas part of any state or commercial campground in Pennsylvania they would easily be among the best tenting sites in the state. Even among Hipcamps we were awarded a top-ten rating in 2018 and 2019 - and we've improved since then. People love it here.
Guests will find a huge, fully-stocked chest of supplies at the lower level to furnish virtually everything you might need to camp in comfort, from pots and pans to cushions, an air pump, and repellent to lighting and phone chargers, there's even a Scrabble game and playing cards. We ask our guests to arrive prepared with their own supplies and to use the supply box as a backup for items that may have been forgotten or to fill in for things they do not want to purchase for a single outing (i.e. please do not depend solely on the camp supplies to meet ALL of your camping needs!) We took every item on your camping list and tried to have it waiting in the box so you can visit more spontaneously without worrying about forgetting anything.
We provide a two-person hammock, some firewood, battery chargers, and plenty of spring water-none of which will you have to carry up. A dry bag with a fire starting kit is included if you aren't keen on starting from scratch. Extra firewood can easily be gathered or purchased during your stay. There are even hatchets and saws in the supply box for cutting fallen branches down to size, and bundles of dry firewood are available .There is also a dual-burner propane camp stove provided if that's your thing. We tried to think of everything so you wouldn't have to, we've got you covered.
Daytime and evening hours are available too for morning bird walks, lunch breaks, herbal retreats, sunset cookouts--whatever guests might imagine doing in the privacy of the outdoors. The woods are teeming with resident species of woodpeckers, owls, warblers and more, and vultures and hawks and can almost always be seen riding thermals overhead. If you're lucky the turkeys will come to roost in the woods above the area as they often do. The best part is that no one else will know you are up there.
Tree climbing and treetop camping are welcome and encouraged for anyone looking for a good place to hang their gear and enjoy the view. There are scores of great campsites waiting to be discovered up there for experienced and responsible climbers.

I would highly recommend this site! Although we did not formally meet, David was an amazing host! We had everything we needed, the site was well maintained and David was a great communicator. The unlimited firewood and amenities were really nice to have. We went to Hidden River Brewery near by, it was about a 8 minute drive from the site if that's your kind of thing! The tent area was small so I would recommend just camping with a total of 2 people.
This is a great site! It's super private and it feels like you're in the treetops. David provides everything you could need (fire kit, bug spray, a deck of cards) and is very flexible and easy to communicate with. The site is beautifully maintained. The only thing is that space is a bit limited. We have a fairly spacious 4 person tent and it took up the entire site so we couldn't set up until we were going to sleep. If you have a two-person tent you should be able to squeeze in but it still might be tight. Also, you should definitely check out Hidden River Brewery!

We have vastly expanded the size of our camping area! In addition to the original camping spot we now can accommodate up to a 15x15ft tents with plenty of room left over on our upper lot. We are always growing and expanding, stay tuned!
Absolutely amazing. We were there for 3 nights and You can feel like legit camping while having everything you could possibly need. It was private and secluded but not too far away from people. David went above and beyond and made a whole list of food places, activities and maps along with providing the all the things he stated on the list. Would definitely come back again!

Ironwood trail was a nice clean organized space to camp. Everything was easy to get to and use. David was easy to communicate with and everything went well. He had flashlights and cellphone charging packs waiting for us at the check in box. The trail in and out is cleverly marked with reflective squares that lead the way in the dark with a flashlight. We heard some really cool birds at dusk. The site is small and compact but work very well. Definitely have a sense of privacy there but conveniently located.
Great spot, super well equipped! Loved the setting - didn’t realize the road would be within earshot, but aside from occasional cars down below, it was perfectly secluded and idyllic!

Secluded and quiet. David went above and beyond to provide firewood and supplies. It really was as simple as setting up the tent and settling in. We had a great time with our 2 dogs!
Host was great, site was fully stocked with everything a camper would need and plenty of firewood. Very well maintained and just big enough for a tent and a little moving space. Nice spot to go for a night in the woods.
So to start I was expecting a simple small spot, but no way. This was a 5 star two person campsite! David the owner had plenty of dry perfect firewood. In the box provided he had chairs lighter plates pots pans and literally everything one would need for camping! In the middle of the night we wanted some eggs for breakfast, so we texted David and he hand delivered us eggs! (Left some extra cash because this was amazing) there was plenty of water and a beautiful well kept site and hammock with a beautiful overlook view! Definitely worth it, we biked to and camped here! We had a massive two person tent which was tight, but two smal hiking tents would have plenty of room, and it’s so secluded so it’s perfect! Some steak, potatoes, and the best night I’ve had in so long!

The trail and campsite was very impressive! Such a lovely little spot that was really well-maintained. The host provides all the necessities and more. It was very peaceful under a canopy of trees, and we even saw some wildlife in the early morning. The location is great, too. You’d never expect that town is just a short ride away, so you can run to the store or pharmacy or diner if you forgot anything!

We loved having you as a guest Sara, and based on your review and other feedback--we are expanding! We are adding an extension to the original site that will easily accommodate a 12 foot x 12 foot tent with room to spare. This will open up Ironwood for families and larger groups in the near future and offer smaller groups room to really spread out. We are always improving and adding new features so check back to see what's new!
