Oak glade wildflower meadow & view

Just walk in any direction, but be prepared: wilderness and National Forest surround us, and conditions can be serious. Bring water and first aid supplies, and let us know your plan: this is truly wild country, and, though FUN, should not be underestimated!

We are an hour from the Pacific beaches at Crescent City and Brookings, so although we are not immediately coastal, it's a short day trip.

Wake each morning to the sunrise over Hope Mountain, which presides over an eighty acre meadow with spring wildflowers and summer waves of amber (flammable!) grain.

The East Fork of the Illinois River is a few short hops from our door. Crystal clear water over serpentine green boulders courses briskly and coldly down to the Rogue River and out to the sea. This salmon-supporting waterway also features furtive river otters, turtles, crawfish, and friendly, harmless naked neighbors who will unabashedly make your acquaintance and offer you picnic snacks and a toke.

See: River, above. Our swimming hole depends upon your fortitude. It's clear, sweet, truly almost drinkable (not quite) and convivial. From May through mid June it's for the cold-hearty. Then through August, we're all in there, lovin' it. September through October, it's back to the tough ones. See your toes wiggle on the bottom, bask on the rocks, pass the spliff.
