Winding Stair Campground sits at an elevation of 3,880 feet, next to the headwaters of the Nantahala River and is surrounded by national forest and undeveloped private land trusts. The stunning mountain views in a remote tucked-away setting make our farm a perfect getaway! Just a 15-minute scenic drive from Franklin in North Carolina, easily accessible off Hwy 64, our campground offers a chance to enjoy nature without being far away from the public amenities of a small but well-equipped town. A few features about our property: - Working farm: Campers are welcome to meet our Icelandic sheep and take a self-guided tour of our farm, along designated pathways. - Security: The campground and farm are fenced in on three sides with the river being the fourth boundary. Personal code to the entrance gate will be given at check in. - Bath House: The restored bathhouse is split into boys’ and girls’ sides. Each side has 2 private showers, 4 flushing toilets, sinks, hot water, and gas heat. - Community Pavilion: The Pavilion is a large 40x30 ft. open sided structure overlooking the Nantahala River. It has an ample fireplace, running water sink, counter space, couches, and table with benches. - Pack Room: Where the adventure begins! A cozy hub where all guests check-in, get local information, view maps, and grab some local seasonal groceries. Also available to all campers are washing sinks with hot water, toaster oven and microwave. - Communication: Or rather, lack thereof! There's no cell service on the property so it's a great time to get away from it all. There is limited Wi-Fi available near the Pack Room and an emergency landline available. - Charging: Traveling in an electric vehicle? Recharge for free at our dedicated EV 50amp outlet when you stay at any of our sites. First come, first served. Want to know more about the history of the property? Group Lane
Great campground!
Group lane was the perfect spot to go camping. It provided all the “ruggedness” of camping outdoors, while keeping many of the luxuries nearby, such as bathrooms with showers, and a covered pavilion. We were able to “power off” with no cell service, but could connect to WiFi if needed. This was the first time that this specific group of individuals had gone camping together (and many hadn’t been camping in years, if ever) and this was a great way to start it off. Our group is now hoping to camp twice a year moving forward, and if we ever find ourselves back in this area we will definitely be staying here! There was a very friendly man named Greg who worked on the campground that served as a valuable resource for information. Thank you Robyn, and the rest of the winding stair campground staff, for an awesome time!

Group Lane
Great group stay!
Our group of 10 had an amazing stay on Group Lane! This is a very thoughtfully run farm and campsite. The bathrooms are spotless and had reliable hot water, the pavilion and community green space are a great area for relaxing or playing some yard games, and the string lights were a great touch on our site. Greg was incredibly nice and made sure we had everything we needed, too. We already talked about planning another trip here! PSA: There is no cell phone service, but decent wi-fi near the bathhouse and pavilion for occasionally checking phones. We enjoyed disconnecting, but I would not recommend trying to sneak by working remotely here!

Brass Camp (Tent site)
Amazing Stay!!
One of the best campsites I’ve been to! Beautiful land with lots of animals all around in a landscape of mountains and a river running by. The river was wonderful to fall asleep to and the campgrounds were immaculately maintained. The fire set up at every campsite with an adjustable grill on top and Adirondack chairs was such a nice feature. The bathrooms were very nice and the showers were nicer than some hotels. The kitchen/packroom area was stellar! Very well equipped with knives, a big wash sink, and anything you could have possibly forgotten. This specific tent site had a great deal of privacy while still being very close to the bathrooms. Could not recommend more!

River House (Private)
River glamping!
We loved the River house! It was absolutely perfect. What a great camping experience for a quick weekend where you don’t have to bring everything like you would with tent camping. Robyn was so quick to respond to any questions we had! The river house is absolutely amazing. Every detail has been thought of yet the simplicity of the dwelling is simply perfect to connect with the amazing stream that it sits on and the forest around you, and yet being in the comfort of an open air sleeping porch was magical! We will be back!
