Baying Hound Campground *SITE 2*
The Baying Hound Campground is where rural Appalachia meets “keep Asheville weird.” You’ll see sleeping pods decorated by professional artists, structures made from upcycled building materials and permaculture experiments in the making. Not quite glamping and definitely not KOA, we're happy to offer you an alternative to cookie-cutter lodging without breaking the bank.

We are easily one of the closest, and cheapest, camping options when it comes to staying in Asheville. Only 8-12 minutes by car from downtown Asheville, we are a friendly, family-run outfit. The camping spots are in a small, private, green valley, and you’ll feel like you’re "out in the sticks" even though you're actually super close to all the breweries and parks that make Asheville what it is.
If you happen to be interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we own and operate a gym on the premises. You'd be able to attend all classes free of charge during your stay!
Amenities: Communal fire pit, picnic tables, outdoor sink with cold running water*, indoor toilet and sink (no indoor shower), outhouse, outdoor solar shower*, hangout spots
*Outdoor sinks and showers are closed November-April. Brrrr!
Full disclosure: there is a farm directly up the hill from us that can occasionally waft unpleasant animal smells (usually when they clean out their pens). No matter how often we tell them, the animals refuse to respect our quiet hours, so you might hear them at night. There is sometimes some noisy traffic in the neighborhood during the day.
Frequently asked question: "Can I sleep in my vehicle?" Yes! The parking area is separate from the camping sites, so you won't be able to pull right up to the spot. Plenty of folks do choose to sleep in their vehicles. The parking area is on a private road shared with elderly neighbors and other campers.
**Between NOVEMBER and MARCH, we can NOT GUARANTEE ACCESS TO THE SOLAR SHOWER due to winter weather. While we still allow winter reservations, please be aware that conditions are on the more primitive side of "primitive camping."**
(Another) Full disclosure:Our neighbor up the hill from us has Confederate flags displayed on his property. We understand the hurtful, disrespectful and ignorant nature of these symbols and really really wish they weren't there. The message they send is the exact opposite of everything we believe - tolerance, love, inclusion, equality - however, there isn't a whole lot we can do about it besides give y'all a heads up and let you know that ALL are welcome here at our campground and differences in race, color, religion, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, and political belief/affiliation are things to be celebrated. Rest assured, the neighbor poses no risk whatsoever - he is an elderly man who has trouble moving around.

This site was amazing!! As first time campers, we felt so eased by the mix between rural and downtown life. Just a short drive to the heat of Asheville, this campsite is hands down amazing and has us spoiled for our next HipCamp stay! The host is incredibly friendly and even chatted with us when she was out and about maintaining the property. Great, great location! Also, big plus for how dog friendly this site (and all of Asheville!) were!
A lovely campsite and grounds, exuding warmth and whimsy. I'm so impressed by the big-hearted spirit of the place. Pitched a tent in Campsite #2. Would gladly stay here again.
Baying Hound is a very cool spot, Robert and Amanda clearly care about their guests and their impact on the world around them. Very close to downtown Asheville and easy to find.
I really enjoyed tent camping at Hipcamp! I had so much fun and everyone was super friendly! The place is very clean and has everything you need. Super close to downtown which is very convenient! Plus they have the friendliest animals! I can’t wait to go back!!
Great campground. Would visit again
This is a great place to camp! We stayed at campsite #2 and had easy access to the potable water. The campsite size was just right. The folks we interacted with were friendly. And the communal indoor bathroom was clean and a welcome site after being outside. The vibe here is pretty cool and it was refreshing not to stay at a cookie cutter tent spot or somewhere with RV’s and generators.
Grounds were absolutely beautiful. Definitely would describe it as a labor of love. Just the right amount of amenities. Super close to down town to grab a bite to eat. 10/10.
Absolutely cool and unique location. Would definitely recommend
