Nestled in an ancient hollow at the foot of the Appalachians, Dragon Hollow Nature Sanctuary spans 30 acres of mature forest, mountain springs, and stream-side meadows bordering another 40,000 acres of Pisgah National Forest. Set up camp by the 150-year-old barn, hike the trails, then enjoy the sounds of the babbling creek as you settle under the whispering trees for a sweet night's sleep. Dragon Hollow boasts abundant wildlife, native flora, and rare species of plants and animals, thanks to its relatively undisturbed forest ecosystem. Bounded by ridges on three sides and set well back from the road, you'll enjoy the quiet solitude of this secluded location, surrounded only by the sounds of the woods. Local Wonders: Dragon Hollow's secluded location is only minutes from a rich selection of attractions. Enjoy the quaint architecture and scenic panoramas of nearby Blowing Rock, NC, as well as its diverse dining options, unique shopping, and local art and history museums. TO ACCESS AND USE THE SITE: Enter the driveway to the Northwest of the road (into the woods and toward the historic barn, NOT toward the house). There is a rope across the driveway entrance, with the words Dragon Hollow. Take it down from the left to enter, and put it back in place when you leave. The driveway splits partway up. To the left is the barn, and to the right is the entrance to miles of trails. Keep your vehicle on graveled areas to avoid getting stuck in the mud. The ground is much wetter than it looks! Pitch your tent on the gravel next to the historic barn. Park in the graveled pull-out area on the left, about halfway up the drive. Light your campfire in the stone circle across the driveway from the campsite, in the clearing by the creek. Feel free to explore the old logging road on foot, and the miles of trails beyond. Please stay on maintained trails to protect the delicate habitats of Dragon Hollow's resident flora and fauna, and observe all signs for your own safety.

Old Growth Camp
The campsite was perfectly setup for what I needed it for, and had a beautiful small stream next to it that I got to listen to at night!

This was a really nice, quiet spot to stay at! During the day, you will hear nothing but birds and trees blowing in the wind. The stars at night are really bright and gorgeous as well. Sleeping is peaceful since there’s a small stream, and you fall asleep to the sound of that (and it’s nice to not have the noise of other campers around if you like the seclusion). We chose this area since it was a very short drive to visit the mountains the next day, so it’s nice that it’s close to some beautiful areas. The owner is also amazing and is quick to help with any questions you might have. We would definitely come back here another time!

Pretty little spot that is nice and secluded. We always prefer a spot where you won’t see or hear other campers and that is definitely true of this spot. There is a house across the road from the driveway that looks straight up at you but I feel that it is likely less visible when the leaves start growing on the trees. Even when you can see it, it’s so far away that you don’t notice it. The hiking trails on the property that we were able to find weren’t very maintained and were quite steep which didn’t bother us but is worth noting. The host states that there are miles of trails but from what I tracked on my Garmin, we were only able to find about 3/4 of a mile worth of hiking that was semi-maintained. There were some spots that seemed like they may be hiking trails but we were unsure of so we did not go on them to respect to host and the wildlife. Overall the campsite itself was great with a good level area to pitch a tent, park for a rooftop tent, or back in a teardrop but we would have liked for the trails to have been marked a bit better since they are advertised multiple times in the listing.

Great get away!
Dragon Hollow is a nice place to camp! With plenty of room to park and set up a tent, you'll feel very comfortable in this quiet, secluded spot. The fire ring is well placed and filtering water from the creek is easy. Definitely check out the trails that lead up to the ridge - it's beautiful up there!
