Lush high desert river oasis nestled in a fertile valley in the Carson National Forest right between the fiery expanse of Taos and the rolling colorful formations of Abiquiu. Peaceful & private 3 acres right by the river at the edge of a little quaint town called La Madera (145 people, no shops)- just 6 miles to the healing mineral Hot Springs of Ojo Caliente. (*they have fully reopened! :)
Two camp spots to choose from- #1 right by the river held by a ridge (that makes for amazing sunset hikes) where I have a 16ft Yurt Canvas Tent set up with some furnishings and a wooden Queen Bed (no mattress, bring your own regular sleeping gear). This site can only be reached by foot.
Or #2 embraced by Willows with views of mountains and surrounding horse fields for RVs/Trailers as well as tents. Comfortably manoeuvre your trailers in and out via a circular pathway, set up main camp and enjoy the river.
Guests may use the bathroom in the main house.
+++ 6 miles to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs (reopened!). There you will find the best restaurant in the area, with locally/organically farmed produce. Very yummy!
The land is naturally & beautifully wild- it is not a manicured campsite. The dirt rd down to the property is best suited for higher clearance vehicles, but is manageable for city cars.
Waterhole, Waterfall and climbing sites near by, as well as Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch and the Taos Gorge are 30 mins drive away.
*No cell service in the greater area. WiFi reaches all the way to the river site and allows for WiFi Calling: that’s a setting in your phone that enables phone calls & texts beside usual internet access.

Stayed in the Yurt by the river and it was amazing! Sus was an incredible host and went beyond any kind of expectations. Hang by the river, or take a quick hike up the ridgeline behind the camp. Incredible sunsets and plenty of stars. Highly recommend.
Gorgeous tucked away spot, lots of bright energy and attention to detail. Amazing views and hospitality. And Sus is an all around badass! Definitely will visit again : )
Sweet and secluded escape
Stunning is an understatement. The camping site is nestled right along the creekside and has a cozy feel. Sheltered on one side by a ridge and above by the canopies of cottonwood trees, the area is quiet and secluded. Surprisingly, WiFi is available from the main house via an extension.
Ridge hiking right on the premises, and conveniently located to ojo caliente, Taos, and Santa fe
Sus is a gracious, warm, and kind hearted host who was exceptionally accommodating. We will be back!
Peaceful, relaxing, and fulfilled
We arrived a little later than I would have liked. The sun was down and we didn’t know what to expect. The turn off of the main road onto the private drive to our spot was a little questionable however, I need you to understand, this is typical for northern New Mexico small towns!! We turned on the drive and down the path and met up with our host. She was amazing!! She led us to the field where we were able to park two trucks and a 24ft camper and set up a tent. The field was private and away from the road and the host’s house. In the morning we walked down to the stream and spent the day splashing and catching whatever we could catch in the water. This spot is close enough to take short drives to ojo caliente for hikes, drinks, a soak, or some dinner, or a short drive to a local swimming hole with a waterfall. At night, we were able to look up and see the amazing Milky Way and shooting stars. Wifi was available at the house and was able to pick it up from the back deck. All in all, we had an amazing experience. Two families, 4 kids, and 3 dogs. Do yourself a favor and drive beyond the turnoff from the road… this tucked away oasis awaits you at the end of the drive!!!
Sus was incredibly welcoming, kind, and gracious to share her beautiful outdoor space in the natural landscape near Taos. Me and my pup loved camping alongside the riverbed and exploring the sites during the day. We’ll be sharing with dear friends and visiting again soon.🌻✨ ~ Claire
This place is a river oasis and provides a lovely secluded spot to relax by the river. Susan was a lovely host and offered her house for use but we only needed it for the kids a couple times. We brought two young kids and partnered with our friends, a family with two kids as well. The kids loved playing in the water all day and the little canyon provided a nice shady and lovely space. I recommend staying by the river site near the house because the cross river site is a bit strenuous to carry gear into. Overall, a lovely little getaway in a beautiful little corner of northern NM.
Pretty spot and a lovely host.
Suz is a lovely host; very welcoming and helpful. Our plans changed as we were arriving and we were not able to stay after all. Property is rustic but pretty and serene. A heads-up that our cars (a VW and a Honda minivan) atruggled coming in, due to ruts and rocks in driveway however, you will do fine with a high clearance vehicle.
