The best camping in Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, AK guide

Overview

About

This is one of the most remote locations in the United States. It's where native peoples traversed a land bridge in between Asia and America. Located in northwest Alaska, this national preserve maintains unspoiled land that looks a lot like it did tens of thousands of years ago.

Imagine what it was like following herds of animals into an unknown land with your family by your side. The wonder of wide open spaces and lack of other humans drew native people to Alaska back then, and it continues to bring campers to this site 15,000 years later.

This sprawling, raw wilderness offers a chance for you to get back to nature during the summer months. Rolling, treeless hills and rugged mountains form the basis of your explorations. There are 300 different species of wildflowers that bloom in the summer. Keep an eye out for hawks, eagles, caribou, brown bears, and Arctic foxes. In coastal areas, bring your binoculars to possibly catch a glimpse of humpback whales, seals, and walruses.

Spend time in a cabin built by gold miners to get a sense of the human presence in the area. The area around Serpentine Hot Springs offers a scenic hike among the huge granite tors, (vertical outcroppings that stick up from the ground). After your long day hike, relax in one of the hot springs to unwind before heading back to your campsite.

Get away from it all in an untamed wilderness. You might even see the Northern Lights! Despite the chilly temperatures at night, this place doesn't give you the cold shoulder when it comes to beautiful scenery.
