Acorn Retreat is a small cozy heated cabin located on the southeast side of Hogback Mountain. It has 2 double beds, one up in a loft and one sleeper sofa, both feature down comforters for this beautiful cooler fall weather. The cabin also has a small rustic kitchen with water, microwave, weber gas grill for cooking, refrigerator/freezer, and best of all a hot tub. It has a brand new outhouse that is very adorable. This is the place to come and reset! There are hiking and biking trails right out the door, and a boat launch for the Dead River within 3 miles.
Things to expect, crowing rooster at dawn, 10 year old boy running or riding around, free range chickens, we have a resident dog and indoor kitty, an occasional siting of a porcupine. Wildlife is abundant, you may hear barred owls hooting at night, coyotes yipping in the distance, see tons of chipmunks, red squirrels, birds, especially hummingbirds. In winter we see more deer come in and hear wolves occasionally in the far distance.
There are trails leading to Hogback, Lily Pond and Harlow Lake. Surrounded by ridges on the backside and a prairie on the front side, there is plenty of places to explore. It is just 2 miles from the Noquemanon Trail Network (north trailhead), which has hundreds of miles of summer mountain biking, hiking trails and winter xc skiing, fat tire biking and skijoring trails. For more information on the trails visit noquetrails.org.
We offer ORV guided tours for both dirt bikes and snowmobiles depending on the season or go on your own with the Michigan maps. ORV vehicles must have a current trail sticker to be legal, these can be purchased at many local businesses.
***Disclaimer: the road to our site is a seasonal, non-maintained county road of gravel, sometimes pot holes and mud puddles. Almost any car can make it to our house, but low profile tires and cars could be a challenge.

Cozy and peaceful
It was lovely to stay here! Getting there was a little confusing the first time, but once there it’s just so quiet and peaceful. It’s near to lots of hiking, some you can even walk from here to the trail. We really enjoyed the hot tub for the cool nights, and the grill was great too. Marquette is super close if you need anything there. April is super sweet and the chickens were fun to see.
The drive in feels really remote, even though you’re only 10 minutes from town. I recommend arriving before dark your first night. Look for the “HR” at the end of the driveway. I had my doubts that I could make it down the drive without getting stuck but my car got in just fine. I drive a Prius.
April is a very friendly hostess and responds quickly to questions. The acorn retreat is just as cute as advertised. And you really are in perfect proximity to anything you want to get to in Marquette.
We hope to stay again soon! We already miss the chickens.
Quiet, green and magical.
This beautiful property is a little hard to get to in a Prius but it was worth the challenge. My friend and I went the wrong was past the property and almost got stuck so definitely follow directions. There are chickens everywhere. The chickens are so friendly and like to hang out so if your an animal lover you will adore the chickens. We didn't spend too much time with the hosts but they seem sweet with really good senses of humor. The acorn retreat is clean and cozy water, eggs, microwave, potable water, clean outhouse and hot tub. The evenings are magical beware of acorns whipping down from the trees! Thank you host and hostess for sharing your paradise with us!
This is a special place! The cabin is so cute and cozy, and the host family is very thoughtful and welcoming. The location is also great - a few miles into the woods but not too far from town, and plenty of natural attractions nearby. Highly recommend!
Perfect get away spot
If I were devious, I would give Acorn Retreat a bad review to keep others away for my own selfish reasons. But I’m not, this was a great stay. The host and her family were super accommodating and have quite the gem for share here. The cabin slept my partner, two kids and I very comfortably, the hot tub was amazing at the end of a long exciting day on the trails and lake, the serenity and lack of phone service are worth 4 stars on their own. And yes, the outhouse does what it’s designed to do in style.
Acorn Retreat was just what four close friends needed to get away, reconnect, rest up, and reflect on a unique year unlike any other.
The tiny house was cozy, cool (decor and temperature) and had an adequate amount of space for our needs. We spent ample time outside on the porch while admiring the beautiful scenery and the friendly chickens. The mini fridge and grill were perfect for simple meals. The hot tub was a welcome treat after local hikes (some very close to the house). Even the outhouse was a thoughtful and pleasant place to take care of business!
April and her family were lovely hosts. They anticipated our needs, gave us the inside scoop on great day trips, and supplied us with treats for the chickens. We felt incredibly comfortable on their property and in their care. This property is a tiny piece of paradise!
We had a wonderful stay at the Acorn Retreat! We arrived after dark & were a bit nervous we would have trouble finding the cabin, but with the directions April provided we had no trouble! The cabin was uniquely decorated & immaculately clean. The property is set back in the woods & felt tranquil & secluded, yet is only minutes from town. April made it a point to welcome us & was very friendly. We enjoyed watching the chickens roam.
