After staying here at Bear Tree Homestead, writer Andrew Stark wrote up a lovely article and Midwest Living Magazine.   In May/June 2020, the article was titled "A Wild and Watery Getaway to Marquette Michigan."

The Orchard Cabin is the first log cabin built on the property. It sits next to the orchard and garden under large hemlock trees. The Cabin is located on the edge of the homestead and in the main compound area of the property and is in view of the owner’s cabin. The covered front porch overlooks the yard and pasture where the sheep and chickens forage. There is a small pond with a hammock, a sitting area, and a fire ring for your use through the garden.

The Orchard cabin has two large lofts that are accessed by a ladder and bridge that connects them. The lofts are set up for sleeping with a queen size bed in one and a set of trundle beds in the other.  There is an extra twin-size mattress under the trundle your welcome to use for a 5th guest and a large sofa that could be used to sleep on, and there is plenty of floor space for air mattresses (provided by you). Sheets and blankets pillows are provided for the four beds in the cabin; however, daily maid service is not part of the package. This is a rustic cabin with electricity and a hand pump for water. There are no showers for this cabin (plans for a sauna are in the works); however, if you really must have a shower, we could arrange a time you could use our shower. The YMCA offers showers and towels for a small fee and is easy to find in Marquette.

The wood-fired masonry stove is the heat source for this cabin.  The wood is provided in a shed attached to the cabin.  There is an outdoors composting toilet that is steps away.  You will find the kitchen fun to prepare meals in with stove, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, cookware, and dishes. There is plenty of room to sit and enjoy yourselves in the living-dining area of this cabin.  Parking for 2-3 vehicles just feet from the cabin.

Once you arrive, you are only 8 miles from Marquette, MI; however, the last 2 miles are on dirt logging roads. So in the spring and winter, an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. You will not want to leave once you are here. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings, collect fresh eggs (when they are laying), lay in the hammock, listen to the sounds of nature and the barnyard or take an adventure hike, bike ride, snowshoe, ski right out the door.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION. This is a working homestead, and our cabins are rustic.   We have lots of sounds around our homestead, including chain saws, dogs, cows, sheep, and chickens, so you will most likely hear some charming farm sounds.  Our dogs are friendly, but they do bark, especially when people come and go.  We also have neighbors, and their dogs seem to think this is the place to be so that you may encounter their dogs as well.  The friendly chickens are free-range, and they have learned that guests in the Orchard Cabin sometimes give them snacks.  So the chickens like to visit this cabin, and our guests seem to enjoy them.  On a very rare occasion, our neighbors may run a generator or have a night party.   The cabins may have spiders and an occasional mouse but we do our best to take precautions before your arrival.

The Homestead is only 8 miles from downtown Marquette but the last 2 miles are trail roads and can be difficult to travel in the winter and spring thaw we recommend a 4 wheel or all-wheel drive during these times, There is no problem getting in during the summer.

Refunds will not be considered for mismanaged expectations, and any concerns can always be addressed with your host directly.

We do accept a 2-day minimum stay.   Due to the Covid-19, we are no longer requiring a meet and greet, but our paths may cross while you are on the property so please maintain the 6-foot social distancing rule.  You can text or call with any questions you may have during your stay.

I can’t overstate how incredible our time at the Orchard Cabin was. The location was ideal and our trip was the perfect balance of cozy rest & relaxation and hiking and climbing nearby. The proximity to nearby trails was especially great. We loved meeting all the animals, too. ☺️ I’m sure we’ll be back!!

What an astonishingly beautiful cabin and surrounding space! I can't even do it justice with a description. Absolutely magical - so many places to sit and relax, so many beautiful little touches, very comfortable bed and cozy furniture for gathering, stocked kitchen... if you want to be in the woods but still have water and electricity and not have to deal with a tent, this is it. Everything about this place is perfect.

We loved the tranquility of the Orchard Cabin. Everything that we needed was there, and then some! Jill and Nick and her in-laws were so warm and accommodating, we were ready to stay forever. The Orchard Cabin is by far the best place we've ever stayed. We're so grateful they are sharing it with us and so many others.

Jill and Nick were the greatest hosts we could ask for. We pretty much lived right in their backyard, but they were awesome about letting us do our own thing as well as making conversation and getting to know us. Jill even baked cookies for us upon arrival. Awesome cabin, beautiful property, excellent hosts! Would stay again

Brought the family back up to Marquette for a few days and had a great stay at Nick and Jill's homestead. The log cabin is great! The small hobby farm was awesome and my children really enjoyed heading up to pet the animals every morning. Watching the humming bird battles over the feeder was a nightly occurrence. Hiking up to Hogback mtn. from the cabin gave some amazing views of the surrounding area.

If you are in to biking/hiking, this is a great location to access both the NTN north trails and the Harlow lake area trails. Or if you are looking at a quiet place to spend some time after hitting up Marquette, this is it.

Perfect respite for the weekend. Close enough to Marquette to enjoy the city but far enough away to avoid the tourist shuffle.

Thank you!

Our stay with Jill and nick was magical. Waking up to Maggie the chicken cooing at our door was definitely the highlight if the entire stay! The property was beautiful. The inside if the cabin was wonderful to spend time in, every detail and comfort of home was present and every nook and cranny of the cabin was thought out and beautiful. watching the hummingbirds from the swing on the porch was so lovely to somebody who has never been that close to them. My boyfriend absolutely fell in love with the animals on the farm especially Bjorn the ram. An absolutely great example of the hospitality that we received while at this small slice of heaven was when after a long day out of town we came back to a tree in our path to get back to our cabin, not to fear Nick made super short work of it and even supplied us with a story some good laughs and some firewood from the tree. Finishing off every night sitting by the pond having a fire was an excellent way to unwind and plan our next day of adventure and relaxation.
