Loon Lake Campground is a unique destination nestled in a stunning natural setting, offering visitors a serene escape with a rich history and a variety of recreational opportunities. Formed approximately 1,400 years ago by a significant landslide in the coastal range of western Oregon, Loon Lake is a picturesque body of water surrounded by towering Douglas-Fir, Western Hemlock, and Red Cedar trees. The lake's outlet, Mill Creek, features breathtaking waterfalls that cascade over 120 feet in less than a quarter-mile, creating a captivating backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. Long before the campground became a popular retreat, the area was inhabited by Indigenous peoples who traveled from the coast and inland valleys to camp, gather huckleberries, and hunt elk. In 1850, as Scottsburg emerged as a vital commercial hub, two explorers stumbled upon the lake and named it after the common Loon duck they observed nesting nearby. Early settlers in Ash Valley engaged in farming, trapping, and trading, but it wasn't until the 1930s that Loon Lake gained attention as a log storage site for transportation to coastal mills.
