Nestled in the heart of Michigan, Chesaning Township offers a unique blend of rich history and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Established in 1835 by the territorial legislature, this area has evolved significantly over the years, with its first township elections in 1847 marking the community's official birthday. Originally named Northampton, the township was later renamed Chesaning, which translates to "Big Rock" in the local Native American language, reflecting its historical roots. Covering approximately six square miles, Chesaning Township is characterized by its serene landscapes and abundant outdoor activities. The land encompasses 1,920 acres, including parts of sections 5, 8, 9, 10, 16, and 17, providing ample space for exploration and recreation. Visitors can enjoy nearby natural features, such as picturesque swimming holes and scenic trails perfect for hiking and biking. In 1869, Chesaning was incorporated as a village, further enriching its historical significance. The first village election took place on April 12 of that year, marking a new chapter in the community's development.
