Fountain Springs Park and Wildlife Area stands out as a hidden gem just 2 miles northeast of Greeley, nestled in sections 10, 15, and 16 of Elk Township (T90N-R4W) in Delaware County, Iowa. Spanning an impressive 239 acres, this area is characterized by its lush hardwood forests, providing a serene escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The park is interconnected by a county gravel road that runs the length of the property, making it accessible for visitors. The rugged terrain features striking limestone ledges that rise dramatically above the stream, creating a picturesque landscape. However, during periods of heavy rainfall, the narrow stream valley can be prone to flooding, adding an element of natural unpredictability to the area. Fountain Springs Park is steeped in history, dating back to 1834 when early settlers established homesteads near the main spring. In 1852, a mill was constructed by a man named Odell, allowing locals to grind wheat. This attracted settlers from across northeastern Iowa, who camped nearby while waiting for their turn at the mill. Although the mill ceased operations in the 1920s due to dwindling patronage and is no longer standing, its legacy remains a part of the park
