Freedom Gulch Base Camp
Horrible and frightening experience
It was a horrible experience. Please read on, hoping hipcamp doesn’t share my address with Patricia as I am scared for my life if that happens as the host’s husband / keeper was extremely hostile 1) The tent site was undulating and had ant infestation 2) The highway was right next to it so all night we could hear the loud noises of cars passing by 3) the creek near the camp site was literally a small dirty stream and puddle with no chance of getting clean water even from a life straw 4) Unfortunately, I ventured just a bit inside the creek (~20 feet) hoping to get flowing water to fill my life straw pouch and the host’s husband / keeper pointed a pistol at me to my utmost shock with a M16 right in the other hand and made racist comments I don’t even want to recall now 5) All my family was so scared that we couldn’t sleep all night long and we left our stay right after the first night and moved to a hotel 6) The hostess Patricia didn’t care, didn’t show up even once 7) the camp site was right next to their house and barn 8) Will not recommend to anyone’s, especially to people of color 9) I have photos which I can share of gun shells around the camp site

Freedom Gulch Base Camp
Fine for a homebase
I was expecting more customer service than I would expect from a state campground, both because the price per night was very expensive, and also because this site gives that impression, almost like an AirBNB for camping. As such, I found communicating with Patricia a little problematic, although she blamed it on the Hipcamp website, so I tried to put that behind me. She also was not flexible when I asked about early check-in time, but that is her prerogative. When I asked for area dog friendly hiking suggestions, she referred me to the RMNP website, which I knew would not be of help because they don't allow dogs inside the park. We saw Patricia at check-in (we had to sign a waiver) and once during our stay when she told us a bear had been spotted the day before. The little canyon was pretty, but the camp sites looked as if they rented an earth mover and shoved the rocks to the side. It is stated that the campsites have picnic tables and it should be mentioned that there is ONE adult-sized table for the three sites on the far side of the creek. I saw two other child sized tables, one for each site on the near side of the creek. She clearly states that fires are not allowed, but two of the sites had them on multiple nights and she did not enforce her own rule. We had to supply our own t.p. to the portapotty on the last day of our stay. Finally, the site is right on the river, which most people know will fluctuate with how much water is flowing, but two days before we arrived, Patricia described the river as being "wade-able", which is questionable. It would have been very difficult to access, because of the rocks and brush, and there was not much water in the river at all. Overall, we had a great time, because we made it great, but I would not recommend this site and will not return. It feels like someone capitalizing on these strange times to charge exhorbitant fees ($50/night!!!!) without providing amenities (except child-sized picnic tables) most national campgrounds have or any additional services.

Freedom Gulch Base Camp
Great Location
Great location, river was nice and relaxing, the dogs loved it. There weren't great spots to set up tents on some of the sites. Host was nice, and had very friendly dogs. Sites weren't super private from each other, so next time would probably want to rent the whole site with friends/family.

Location!
Great location. Not secluded. Some of the sites were under water.
