HMB Highway Overnight Rest Stop
Close to Coastal Trail
We loved the proximity of Dennis and Cynthia's property for biking the Coastal Trail and visiting Half Moon Bay State Beach, and we appreciated being able to leave our van in a safe place while we explored. For remote workers, AT&T cell service was worthless on Sunday, July 7th following 4th of July when everyone was traveling home. It seemed like the network was getting bogged down. However, Starlink worked great.

#2 HMB Highway Overnight Rest Area
Convenient but smelly
Overall we made the best of it. The location was convenient as we had family staying at a nearby hotel. But the site has a port-a-potty situated directly next to the designated parking areas and the smell of the chemicals was bad enough to wake us up in the middle of the night. We had flagged this to the owner immediately upon arrival, because you could smell it as soon as you drive in, but she was dismissive.

#2 HMB Highway Overnight Rest Area
Hipcamp in HMB
This was a nice level gravel spot to pull in for the night. We are very familiar with the area so we knew what to expect in terms of close proximity to the highway. We had scoped the area to make sure we could find it to pull in off busy HWY 1 in the dark as we knew we wouldn’t settle in until late evening so we could spend time at the state beach about 12 miles South and go into town for dinner. The drive is not super well marked (grassy weeds over the dirt before the gravel roadway and landing) It wasn’t clear if there was an actual dedicated spot for #1 or #2, so we pulled in along the edge of gravel line at about 915 at night. Another vehicle with small trailer pulled in about 15 minutes after us and wasn’t sure where to park either. It’s nice the area is fairly well hidden from the road but it was dark enough that I needed to shine a light to the area so he could back his little tear drop trailer in. There is one fire pit in the corner of the lot.. so be prepared to share or make friends if there is another camper. We were solely there to sleep for the night in a safe space so our camp friend had the fire pit to himself. There is an adjacent property with plenty of roosters and chickens to awaken you in the am. I’m not sure where you would walk to the bluffs from this location, but you could walk to a local well known restaurant and pub (Cameron’s) for a bit of British ambiance complete with double decker bus and a ton of memorabilia.

We were well taken care of and enjoyed our stay! Great spot just off of one a five minute drive from the main street and a short walk to the beach.

HMB Highway Overnight Rest Stop
The view is beautiful. The camp site is alone. Although very close to highway 1, so somewhat noisy. We had a nice hike, nice dinner, nice campfire.

Comms issues with hosts (1st timer)
Very much likely it is due to the fact that this is my first time using this platform, but I had a very hard time contacting the hosts. That provoked that I got there very late after looking around the neighborhood for quite a while. I had to spend the night at a hotel nearby and I ended up not using the place.
Location
Half Moon Bay, San Mateo, California, United StatesTraditional, ancestral territory of Ohlone, Ramaytush, and Muwekma First Nations according to To respect the Host's privacy, the precise address of this land will be provided after booking
