Nestled in a picturesque location, our campground and marina, Sugar Barge, stands out for its rich history and unique connection to a legendary cargo vessel that once graced these waters. The name "Sugar Barge" pays homage to the storied "South Shore #1," a cargo ship built in 1925 at Stone's Shipyard in Alameda. This vessel was a workhorse, transporting general freight between Redwood City and San Francisco for many years. In 1942, the ship was acquired by River Lines Co. and continued its freight operations between Vallejo, Oakland, and San Francisco. By 1945, it was renamed "M. V. Mokulii" and became known for delivering sugar to railheads in Richmond and Oakland, earning its nickname as a sugar barge. After a long career on the waterways, the "M. V. Mokulii" found a new purpose when the Joseph Family purchased it from C&H Sugar and moored it at Bethel Island, transforming it into a snack bar. In 1969, the vessel underwent a significant renovation and was reborn as the "Sugar Barge Restaurant and Lounge," featuring two decks with a bar on the lower level and dining above.
