Red Gate Farm, LLC is beautiful, hidden oasis of sustainable permaculture totally secluded from the typical Illinois corn and soybean fields. We are a very active, working, horse-powered farm. From the moment you drive in, you will see differences from most modern farms. Our laying hens freely run our green pastures; all our livestock are rotated throughout our land to ensure biodiversity and soil health; our heritage breed hogs are nearly unnoticed as they forage in their forest paddocks; our small herd of Alpine goats help us clear and manage invasive forages while providing amazing milk to drink; our orchards and gardens are designed to grow in harmony with nature while providing chemical-free food for the family; our horses live on a “Paddock Paradise” track system that meanders through our woodlands, imitating the movements of wild horse herds--and speaking of will horses, if your timing is right, we may have a load of wild horses here for training in our TIP program! ; and so much more!
After parking and checking in, you will be provided an info packet to assist you during your stay. We offer a very nice primitive camp site with several tent site choices. You should be prepared for some hiking, as the site is located roughly 1/4 mile from the main house and parking area. We are happy to provide your gear a ride in our farm golf-cart at check-in and then back up at check out, assuming we are available.
Once you get your campsite site up, you can sit back and relax, as you take in the sights and sounds of nature that will surround you. You will feel almost completely secluded. At dusk and dawn, if you sit quietly enough, you may even see some of our many white-tail deer, wild turkey, or other wildlife come to drink at the pond. You can swim in the pond, use the v-boat, or even walk around the farm to enjoy the scenery.
If you leave time for sight-seeing in the area, we are surrounded by wonderful and historical attractions! We are just 2 miles from Lincoln's New Salem State Park and Historic Site. Roughly 20 miles southwest of us is the Illinois capital, Springfield, which has an array of great restaurants such as Darcy's Pint which serves up the famous award-winning Horseshoe; historic sites including the famous Lincoln Presidential Museum and Lincoln's Village; Knights Action Park and Water Park, perfect for a hot summer day; and much more! About 30 minutes west of the farm is Jim Edgar Park, which has some amazing fishing ponds, hiking and horse-back riding trails, and wildlife viewing.
If you’re interested in experiencing farm life, we welcome you to join us for chore time. We offer educational tours and other options by appointment for an additional fee, or even a horse-drawn wagon or carriage ride for a discounted hourly rate. For more info on options, just ask! We are happy to send you info in advance!
Our goal is to provide you with an opportunity to experience our piece of paradise, and create memories you will always cherish!
*Please note that the base price of $30 includes one car, one tent, and 2 people. You can also customize your visit with a large stack of pre-cut firewood, tours, and more, or add on additional guests, tents, or cars for a nominal fee.

The vibe at A Central Illinois Paradise
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Whether you're a tent camper or fully dependent on your hammock, there's a perfect amount of shady trees for whatever you prefer! A beautiful working farm full of family values and plenty of privacy in such a historic area with tons to do in and out of your camping site.
Enjoy the surrounding city or a swim at your camping site - you won't be disappointed with the amount of things to do. I had such a relaxing time hanging around in my ENO while joyfully smelling potatoes cooking over an open fire, just in time for a little lunch!
Take a tour of the farm, rent the boat, learn from the owners, and have a great time!
We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect stay here at red gate farm. The family graciously greeted us upon arrival, and helped us with any questions we had throughout the stay. Our campsite was perfect, and we even enjoyed the use of the camping stove Danielle and Sean brought down for us before we arrived.
Communication was extremely easy and efficient prior to, and during, our arrival. And, my kids are still in awe at all of the chores the kids can knock out before 7:30am! They taught us so much in such a short time - we will definitely be back!
Thank you for delightful, peaceful and educational visit, Danielle and Sean!
Sean and Danielle were fantastic hosts! From the moment we arrived, they made us feel welcome. Sean helped us with our gear to and from the campsite which was a huge help. The site itself is just gorgeous! Very private and peaceful, with a firepit, a griddle for cooking and your own private swimming hole. They offered to show us around the farm and had fresh, REAL organic produce/meats to purchase when we arrived. They also pointed us in the direction of some really cool local sites which I highly recommend if you are in the area, including: Lincoln’s New Salem and Lincoln’s Presidential Library and Museum. Totally worth the trip out to both sites! I highly recommend staying on Sean and Danielle’s farm, they are really sweet people and we had an awesome experience at Red Gate Farms!
Fantastic camp site!
Some friends and I spent a night at the camp site at Red Gate farm and I can not recommend it highly enough. It was secluded but safe and there was plenty of room to put our three tents up. The fire pit and rustic benches around it was co for table and spacious enough for five of us to maintain a safe distance apart. The following morning, we took a tour of their remarkable self sustained farm. I will definitely go back.
One night stay like a long vacation
Sean and Danielle made this stay such a great experience. They were very welcoming (including their remarkable children), it was clean and felt very safe, the campsite was perfect (including the giant cast iron pan left for us to use at the campfire) and the farm tour was the icing on the cake. I grew up on a farm and I was fascinated throughout the whole tour. Even though the campsite was twenty-five minutes from my house and we stayed for only one night, I felt like I had a multi-day vacation.
Goats & glow worms & great camping
I would say I'll be back, but I already have been (and likely will be again)! The first time was just me, the dog, and an entire book read under trees in one day, the second time I left the dog home and brought the husband and 12-year-old instead.
Both trips were different varieties of just what we needed. To be clear, we love and specifically seek out primitive campsites, that's the draw - you're somewhere between a campground and backpacking here, and it's perfect.
And then there's the real reason I love it here: the frequent kerplunks into the immediate pond, and the pond over yonder. Depending on the size, could be a frog, could be a turtle, or could be the piggies taking a swim! Around various bends on the farm you'll also find chickens, guinea hens, goats, horses of course, farm cats, and the best farm dogs ever - two big livestock guard guys (who like to lean on you for pets during the farm tour), and the best/tiniest greeter dog ever.
Pretty sure we met the majority of the family over our two visits, everyone was a delight, both from a guest perspective, and the incredible job they're doing on this land they care for so much. So glad we did the farm tour - while we don't have pigs and goats, we learned so much we're going to put to use in our food garden at home.
The site feels a world away from your car and the house, but it's just down a hill around a bend. In the morning the mists float over the pond, the fire pit area gets shaded hours before sundown, and you open your tent late at night to a sparkle of glow worms.
I love this magical place to pieces.
My roommate and I spent one night at Red Gate Farm and both had a blast. The farm is adorable! We were super comfortable, really enjoyed the setup of the campsite, and were impressed with the hospitality the hosts provided. It was the perfect camping getaway from the city and I wish we could have stayed longer! Although we were completely entertained at the site (rowboat!! animals!! nature!!), there are several different things to do and interesting places to see in the surrounding area. I would highly recommend this site. Thank you so much Sean and Danielle!
Sean and Danielle were incredible hosts. I stayed for 4 days and 3 nights with my 3-year old daughter. They took the time to show us around and have a beautiful piece of land. I would highly recommend a visit and we plan on going back!
