Rustically romantic Hale Mahina offers guests serene privacy on the lush side of the Big Island just 35 minutes from both Hilo Airport and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You’ll find it behind a dedicated locked gate on the edge of Mahina Acres, our small chicken farm. This area used to be cane fields, but today it’s a lush palm, waiawī and ʻōhiʻa forest full of wildlife & feral creatures. The 1000-foot elevation keeps temperatures cool, and the soothing songs of crickets and coqui frogs lull guests to sleep at night. Relax — you’ve got the place to yourself. But don’t worry — your hosts, should you need them, are just minutes away.Tucked away on a wooded kipuka, this peaceful little retreat is built around an adorably efficient covered deck with an eating ledge looking out toward the sunrise. The main living area is a screened hexagonal gazebo with a queen bed, television, dresser, desk and sitting area. Curtains can be drawn for privacy and warmth. The complementing tiny house on wheels is a few steps away and contains a kitchen, dining counter, kitty attic, flush toilet and shower. A second point of entry, the walk-through bathroom, opens onto a small slate deck with a sink and washer. An additional outside shower is down some steps and around the corner. Two initially shy but friendly cats drift in and out of the tiny house. This retreat was designed for couples, but additional bedding can be set up for agile guests in the kitty loft. Relax — you’ve got the place to yourself. But don’t worry — your hosts, should you need them, are just minutes away.
