The Chumash called the peak of Mount Piños the center of the universe, or center of the world depending on the translation. This campground is at the southeast base of this mountain. The San Andreas fault is just about 8 miles away, and many other faults meet nearby. The mountains here are full of geological signs of the Forces that ripped away Santa Barbara from the North American plate as it was flipped upside down. This is the entrance to the Enchanted Forest. Learn more about this land: Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Our neighborhood is a gem within Lockwood Valley. The community has less than 20 residences so it is very rural, but neighborly. There are horses nearby, you will hear some roosters in the distance, and if you are lucky, you may hear the African lions or wolves from the next canyon over where there is a (fully contained) wildlife sanctuary called Steve Martins Working Wildlife (not the funny guy). Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road. The actual property of the site is 1/8 of an acre and is surrounded by forest and fields. A picnic table is nestled in a grove of trees next to a steel fire pit ring. Bring your hammock to relax under big shady piñon pines. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal. There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp. This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).

This place was just what we were looking for. A quiet getaway in a beautiful setting. There is a farm and our toddler loved seeing the goats, chickens and donkey. We were shown great hospitality from the host and made us feel at home. Great hikes right outside the door! We were even able to purchase some meat and eggs from the farm! A unique experience all around, would highly recommend!

Everything about our stay was absolutely lovely. The home itself is warm and inviting with everything I needed to cook there and enjoy a nice weekend away. It’s also surrounded by a private fence so it made us feel even more disconnected from the world, making our trip that much more relaxing. Definitely a place worth staying over and over again. The bed was super comfortable and there was almost no outside noise to disturb us but the best part had to be the stargazing. The view of the night time sky was breathtaking. This has been my favorite place to stay.

It was my first time Glamping. And boy was this an amazing spot and experience. Shirley and Matt are so nice and attentive. We had everything we could need. They even had extra blanket and towels. I couldn't believe how large the tent was and it also had an island on the side where we could make coffee (which they were kind enough to provide) and prepare food on. Thanks so much Shirley and Matt for making this a positive experience.

Great location tucked in the hills above Santa Barbara. Pretty close to both downtown and Goleta, about 15 minutes from site. The glampsite itself was extremely cozy and running shower with hot and cold water in the shack next door with an accompanying toilet. Little sink right one the outside for all bathroom sink needs and doubles as dish washing sink. Right next to that is the freshwater spring tap which might have been my favorite feature. Tasted so clean, better than any water you could buy in a store. The tent was very clean and tidy, a few bugs here and there but that’s nature for ya. Bed was very comfy and comfortable, and rest of tent area was reasonably spacious. Refrigerator was a lifesaver, as was the fan with the temperature reaching high 80s while we were there. Some cookware is provided, but did not use it as we got sandwiches in town to bring back for dinner. Deck right out front of the tent was awesome, set some chairs up and looked straight out into the foresty area and felt like we were in a tree house. Did have service up there surprisingly, but WiFi provided as well. Very satisfied with our experience and will be coming back.

This site is so awesome! The hosts are really kind and communicative, and have done such a nice job laying out the four sites they have. Far enough away that you can't see and barely hear each other, close enough to give that sense of safety and community in the night. Clean, easy and charming outhouse, nice fire pit with cooking grate, picnic table, trash can. and fire tools. Everything you need and nothing you don't. They also have kept the land so natural and beautiful, with mature juniper all around. The location is insanely beautiful, big clear sky, gorgeous mountains, an hour from Ojai over a beautiful mountain pass. Honestly you don't usually get this quality of campsite on private lands. Love it! This was our second time here and we'll definitely be back.

My husband and I took our two horses to Daniel’s camp and had the most amazing time! We stayed two nights and spent the days riding through the Los Padres National Forest. The views are spectacular and you can tell how much he cares about the land and his property. Daniel also told us about the trails behind the property and where to go for the best sunset views! We were able to park a three horse gooseneck with mid tack and weekender into the site without a problem, but anything bigger may take some creative backing or not fit. He had water available for the horses which was also a huge plus! This is an amazing gem of a find and we can’t wait to go back!

We believe it will give you a better appreciation of life's simpler side. That being said, and to maintain the balance here at home, we'd appreciate if you keep your dogs in your car until you get to your site. Our offerings include fresh air and sunshine, amazing night sky, endless views, and plenty of space and privacy to enjoy your moments in nature. You'll find our amenities and activities puposefully sparse here. Upon booking, there are about 5 miles of dirt road on the property that you are welcome to explore on foot or by bicycle. Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable. For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away. Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. In the 1950's and 60's, this was the site of the World's largest orchid farm. There is a book called The Royal Rancho, if you are a history buff. We are a farm on the beach just North of Santa Barbara and Goleta, Ca. You will camp in a historic, glass greenhouse with incredible ocean views. Inside is a cob pizza oven that works awesome. (Bring your own firewood),,, a place to pitch tents and tiny artistic structures to explore. You will have a private bath and shower (Primitive, no electricity, but the hot shower has the best view in the world of any shower!) Bring your own toiletries and whatnot. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.** Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Be sure to check the Google for distance to Cuyama Valley, and your dates for availability and site descriptions.
