The best glamping near Fairbanks with wifi provided

·

Getting to Fairbanks may not be easy, but the payoff is big. Here, the Land of the Midnight Sun gets 20 hours of daylight in June, supercharging outdoor adventure potential. And come winter, it’s one of the most reliable places on earth to witness the mercurial glow of the Aurora Borealis. For many campers, Fairbanks serves as a hub for trips to Denali National Park and Preserve or the Arctic Circle. But the area immediately surrounding this Interior Alaska city has extraordinary nature spots worthy of their own visit, including rivers, hot springs, rock climbing and backpacking sites, and winter sports like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and skiing.

Dragonfly Cabin

1. Dragonfly Cabin

5.4mi from Fairbanks · 1 site · Lodging · Fairbanks, AK
This cozy, pet-friendly tiny home is located on 90 acres of private woodlands only 15 minutes from the airport and major shopping centers and only 5 minutes from the University. All of the woodwork, metalwork, and furniture was handbuilt by us and our friends and it has wifi, a full kitchen, and outhouse. Designed for the adventurous who appreciate craft and want to experience the Fairbanks lifestyle, the trails to our woods begin right outside your door for you and your pets to explore! You can watch the aurora from the warmth of your bed, from the fire pit, or from one of the clearings in the woods a few minutes' walk away with your furry friends. You can ski on our trails in winter or walk them in summer (be prepared for wet feet!) and discover the fascinating complexity of the ecosystem here. Here you can also see the impacts of climate change on our landscape firsthand, as the permafrost in our woods is melting, causing deep depressions and tilting trees. The cabin likely has everything you need for cooking including a hot plate, microwave, small oven, pots and pans, utensils, etc. There is water at the sink from a cistern and bucket underneath that must be emptied when full. The is no indoor toilet, but a comfortable, clean outhouse is only a few steps from your door. There is also no shower, but the laundromat only a few miles away has private showers for only a few dollars. Pets are welcome! We do ask that they not sleep in the bed as pet hair can be impossible to remove from sheets, that you do not leave your pets unattended in the cabin, and that you pick up after them. You can walk them off leash in our woods, though keep in mind there are lots of squirrels, bunnies, and other wildlife that live there, and we ask you keep them on leash if walking within our neighborhood. The cabin is only a block away from a bus stop as well as a bike trail that will take you into the heart of town.

Where to go

Denali National Park

It’s two hours from Fairbanks to the Denali Visitor Center at the start of Denali Park Road, the only road through Denali National Park. The spectacular 20,310-foot Denali peak at the park’s core draws the world’s toughest mountaineers, but there are trails for all abilities across the park’s 6 million acres of Alaska Range backcountry. Denali campers can choose from six campgrounds and may spot brown bear, moose, Dall sheep, or caribou. Plus, don’t miss the park’s sled dog kennel, where a sighting of the hardworking canine ranger huskies is guaranteed.

Chena River Region

Just east of Fairbanks, the Chena River State Recreation Area is some 250,000 acres of wildlife viewing opportunities and hiking trails among granite tors. The Chena River draws anglers each July for its king salmon run, and is also a popular rafting and kayak route. Nearby, the Chena Hot Springs Resort lets tired hikers and winter travelers warm up in a 106°F soaking pool.

Steese National Conservation Area

Roughly two hours from Fairbanks along the scenic Steese Highway, the remote Steese National Conservation Area is a sprawling tundra and alpine backcountry whose challenging Pinnell Mountain National Recreation Trail draws backpackers.

When to go

Fairbanks is a year-round destination, though experiences in summer (20-hour days with temperatures in the 70s in June) and winter (four hours of daylight and average high temperatures of -5°F in December) are polar opposites. The northern lights are most likely to be visible between September and April.
