West of Cannes, it’s about a 2-hour drive to the iconic resort town of St Tropez, passing idyllic port towns and sandy bays along the way. Mid-way between Cannes and St Tropez, stop off at the twin resorts of Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël or enjoy hiking in the Massif de l'Esterel with spectacular views across the Mediterranean Sea.
East of Cannes, a road trip along the Côte d’Azur unveils a string of glitzy seaside resorts, white-sand beaches, and ocean viewpoints. Soak up the atmosphere in Antibes, visit the French Riviera capital of Nice, then follow the coastal Corniche all the way to Monte Carlo in Monaco. There’s a wide choice of camping options en route, whether you prefer a 4-star holiday park with a swimming pool and water park or a tranquil Hipcamp hidden in the hills.
The scenic climb into the hills north of Cannes takes you to Grasse, famous for its mountain views, wildflower fields, and French perfumeries. Further north, the alpine foothills and forested gorges of the Préalpes d'Azur Regional Natural Park is a wild playground for hikers, mountain bikers, and rock climbers.
Cannes is overflowing with tourists through July and August, as well as during the annual Cannes Film Festival in May, so expect big crowds, full campsites (advance bookings are essential), and high-season prices if you visit at these times. The balmy sunshine of the French Riviera lasts from spring through fall, and camping season in France typically runs from April through October, so make the most of the shoulder seasons if you can.
