Aspenwald Tent Site 1
Snow Camping At Aspenwald
This Hipcamp sits tucked between mountains nearby the Pike-San Isabel National Forest off a network of gravel roads. It offers 5 walk in campsites surrounded by Aspens behind a locked fence for a little extra security.
While I would highly suggest camping here, I think I may have missed the ideal season at Aspenwald since all the leaves had fallen and thin layer of snow covered the ground, providing a little less tree cover than usual. Either way, this campsite was easy to find and access based on the directions, and have everything I needed for a night outside.
I camped in campsite 4 which is the closest to the parking area to access campsites 1-4 (5 is a drive in site on the other side). All campsites had fire pits, level land to pitch a tent, and were surrounded by trees. At this time of year you can see the road from the campsite but traffic was low. Campsites 1-4 are walk-in and be aware that you have to walk through campsites 2 and 3 to get to 1 which is the farthest away. All campsites are fairly close together so you will never have to travel too far from your car.
Highlights include the fire wood shed which made starting a fire easy, even in the snow, the surrounding mountain views that you could catch from the far side of the campground and on the surrounding roads, and of course being surrounded by the unique Aspen trees!

quiet cozy land
Nice quiet property, unfortunately had lots of snow when we went but what we could see was beautiful. The stars out there were absolutely breathtaking…too bad it was 18 degrees. The dirt road was a bit bumpy but once you gain the courage to go the speed limit the suspension takes over and it’s not too bad. Also had zero reception once we hit the dirt road, so be prepared! overall great location.

The ground was uneven so I needed some leveling to sleep flat. Other than that, it was fantastic. 10/10 would book again. Quite & beautiful space with free firewood included

Aspenwald Tent Site 1
Really nice spot
We only stayed one night but it was great! We picked site one for the fire pit and rock formation. It was everything we expected! Road wasn't to bad at all, the only slight negative was the walk from the parking area to the site and honestly even that wasn't bad just recommended you have a wagon to haul your gear down. Yes there is a road right by it but you could only see the backside of our tent from the road and there is hardly any traffic on it so it doesn't disturb you

Great trip!
The site was beautiful! You will have to walk past multiple other tent sites but it’s not too awkward. There is only one drive in site, I wouldn’t try and drive your car in past site 4 unless it’s a smaller 4 wheel drive car! The aspen were out of this world on October 7th! We met John briefly and he and his family were super nice. The dirt road is 11 miles long to get to the site so just be aware and make sure your suspension can handle some washboard.

Aspenwald Tent Site 2
Very cute site!
Very cute site!! Directions were super easy to follow, plenty or firewood chopped and deadfall all over, good sized fire pit and the sites are clear and even - perfect for pitching a tent!! The trees were gorgeous still, the skies were clear and stars were so bright, and at night it was very quit and peaceful. Plus, the property goes really far back so if you're into taking strolls through the woods, you're in luck!
I was the only camper there which was great - there are a few minor things that would have been a bummer for me if the other sites were full. The tent sites are all pretty close to each other, and the path goes through the camps, instead of around, so people have to walk through each other's camps to go back and forth to the parking spots, wood pile, etc. Also pretty close to the road, which was only moving during the day, but stayed pretty busy for a middle-of-nowhere dirt road. The site was fully visible from the road, and of course from the adjacent sites. Again, this is personal preference, I like my camping experiences to be more private, and secluded.
Otherwise, this would be great for someone coming to the area to hunt, or for a family who wants to take a day trip to the fossil beds, or people who don't mind potentially sharing close quarters with others :)
