Walk-in Grouse Ridge View
before we can provide a recommendation.

Pitch your tent or sleep under the stars at the top of Sugarpine Slopes which looks eastward to Grouse Ridge. It is a short walk, approximately a half mile up an old logging road to the top (this is a park and hike-in, your car will not be next to the tent-site). It takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on you! Follow the yellow ribbons to the top and pick your spot.

The views through the trees are lovely and will give you the morning sunrise and in the evenings the setting sun will light up the Ridge. Look to your right and slightly downhill to see an old and large sugarpine tree with its huge cones hanging down from the end of its branches.
This would be a perfect spot for your first overnight backpacking with young kids because it is a short hike but has the feel of being "out there" and you are close enough to the parking for you to go back at anytime. You are within 4 miles to the South Yuba River and various hiking trailheads in the area.
