As soon as I drove onto the property the family dogs were there to greet me. One was just a pup and was super excited to see a visitor. Karen was out tending to the horses when I arrived but came to greet me and showed me the property. I also met the resident barn cats Butter and Popcorn.
Karen showed me the camping spot. Approximately 15 foot x 20 foot grassy area that is surrounded on 3 sides with bushes and other brush to provide privacy. The other side backs up to a fence where the horses and barn are located. This is facing West, so great for watching the sunset. There is also a hose in the camping area to provide acess to the clean well water and a motion sensor light in case you need to get up in the middle of the night.
Karen also offered the use of the bathroom located through the back door of the house off of the laundry room. It was very clean.
The property was a bit busy the day I visited. Karen explained that her adult chidren where living on the property due to changes in circumstances related to the corona virus. But everyone was respecful and quiet.
The property is relatively small for all that is going on. The camping area is spacious and pretty private. However, be aware that this is a working ranch and therefore people will be out in the barn area in the early evening and again in the mid-morning.
Great spot to pitch a tent and relax after a day at the river. Much quieter than a busy campground. Great for animal lovers!
The South Yuba River area is truely amazing. I visited the Hoyts Crossing area. Usually 90 degrees in the summer it was actually a pretty cool day. Be prepared to hike a bit. Steep trails down to the river and scrambling required on boulders along the river make this spot not ideal for very young children. The river was very strong as well so be careful.
I would also recommend the downtown area of Nevada City with the variety of local shops and restaurants. I'm sure Karen would be happy to make recommendations.
All in all this location suited my needs. I would say its best for novice campers who want to be in nature but still close to ammenities with someone onsite just in case.
We had such a great time at this site! Karen was a wonderful host who was so accommodating. We can’t wait to come back and stay again!
Comfortable and super convenient to South Yuba River State Park. Nice to have access to the bathroom and even a little fridge out by the pool. Campsite is partly enclosed by bushes and feels pretty private. Hosts were warm and welcoming and I had an easygoing stay. If I’m around here again I’d stay here again - it’s a good find.
Horses! Doggos! Kitties! Fresh air and bright stars! Karen and her family are generous, great hosts and they're property is gorgeous! 😍 We really enjoyed sitting in our little campsite during sunset watching the many birds fly around while the beautiful horses grazed just beyond the white fence. When night fell, the stars popped! Very private camp space with the option to enjoy the family's historic and lovely pool. I can't recommend this place more highly of you want to spend some good time on the river with an oasis to call home about 10 minutes away from the state park.

Karen has a gorgeous farm full of beautiful horses and working dogs :) She was extremely accommodating and helped us feel right at home. Great location- Yuba River is just 15 minutes away. Highly recommended for all animal lovers and river enthusiasts.
I highly recommend staying at Karen C’s Haven. It has a great location in Penn Valley, surrounded by animals and trees, and the amazing South Yuba River is only 15 minutes away! This place is wonderful, I had a great time this past weekend. From the beginning, I felt welcome by the host and her family, who were very nice to me and my crazy puppy. Karen is an amazing host. Thank you for your hospitality! :)

This was a great cozy space. I loved being next to the horse fields, watching them was a delight. The camping area feels very private and is a good size space. I had a great night sleep and would definitely return! Thanks Karen!

The campsite was quiet & a perfect size. Very private. We arrived late to the property but Karen was there to greet us and show us around. The site had some light and a log burner with wood to use.
We had some dinner in the local town.
Plenty of farm animals to hangout with.
Lovely secluded single camping spot close enough to the home for easy access to the bathroom, and still far enough away for privacy. The morning experience is wonderful - with views of the horses and with the use of the table and kettle next to the swimming pool area for our morning coffee. The spot worked great for our small camper van which just fit under the overhanging branches at the entrance - wouldn't work for one any larger, but for tent camping, just perfect. Thank you, Karen!
