A small and simple camping field near Aberystwyth

Pitch your tent at CampSiriol and you are well located to explore all of Ceredigion Bay. This small campsite is slap bang in the middle of it. You won’t quite have a sea view but you are only five minutes’ drive from the nearest beach and seaside Aberystwyth is not much further. The campsite is in a rural spot on the edge of a village that makes for an excellent base. You can head out on dolphin-watching boat trips, sign up for surf lessons and chow down on fresh seafood all before returning for a campfire under the stars.

Simple pleasures like that are what this place is all about. It’s a basic campsite that will suit confident campers who like to get off grid. There’s no electric hook-up here and no hardstanding either. In fact, there are no designated pitches at all. It’s just a half-acre paddock in which you are welcome to pitch your tent. And because it’s kept deliberately car-free, there’s more space for that – and your kids can run about freely while you enjoy countryside views. Facilities are basic but clean: a flushing loo and a pay-for shower for which you’ll want to keep a pound coin or two handy.

This is a campsite that’s on a domestic scale. There are just a few pitches here along with a yurt and a static caravan (both bookable elsewhere). Your hosts’ house is just behind the camping paddock which all makes for a friendly atmosphere. The communal fire pit helps with that too. It’s the ideal place to share stories about which beaches you’ve visited, which mountains you’ve scaled and where the best place for fish and chips can be found.

Located in the peaceful and scenic Clarach valley and the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere within Wales' warmer, drier coastal zone. Just 10 mins walk from amenities of Bow Street but 5 mins drive from the nearest beach, 10 mins from Aberystwyth's shops bars and restaurants and a huge range of outdoor and indoor activities whether you like them fast or slow within 30-40 mins. One of Wales' best mountain walks, Cadair Idris is just 40 mins away. The beautiful waters of Cardigan Bay and the west-facing beaches are perfect for sunset fires on the beach. This largely undiscovered part of Wales offers real peace and tranquility with something for everyone.
Nearby attractions

CampSiriol is near the village of Bow Street, just four miles down the road from Aberystwyth. The closest beach is Clarach Bay (two miles) where there’s a sand and shingle beach. You could join the Wales Coast Path here and follow it south to Constitution Hill on the edge of Aberystwyth. It’s home to the largest camera obscura in the world, a cafe and the top of Aberystwyth’s cliff railway – which is the longest electric funicular in the world. You can use to descend to the seaside town where there’s more Victorian charm thanks to the promenade, pier and elegant buildings. There’s a marina too with the opportunity to hire paddleboards and kayaks. You can try surfing with lessons available from Aber Adventures at Borth Lifeboat Station (four miles) or at Ynyslas (six miles). Ynyslas Dunes are worth a visit too, part of a national nature reserve on the Dyfi Estuary. There are dolphin-watching boat trips from New Quay (26 miles) and the popular harbour resort of Aberdyfi is 25 miles in the other direction (north). It marks the southern edge of  Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. If you fancy a hike in the mountains, Cadair Idris, at 893 metres, provides a worthy challenge. You can tackle it via the steep Minfford Path in about five hours. A visitor centre and a car park are about an hour’s drive (30 miles) from site.

Food and drink

It’s less than half a mile up the road from CampSiriol to the nearest pub and shop. The Welsh Black has a menu of Thai food (with roast dinners on a Sunday). Ice creams and burgers are on offer from a cafe down at the holiday park at Clarach Bay (two miles) and if you’re taking on the hike to Aberystwyth, you can stop at cafe, Y Consti, to refuel. There are plenty of great options in Aberystwyth itself which has a reputation as a bit of a foodie destination. Try delicatessen and wine shop, Ultracomida, to pick up or eat Spanish and Welsh produce, tapas style, or head to the seafront for fish and chips. For a really good meal out you could go the extra few miles to Y Ffarmers, a country dining pub with a garden in the pretty village of Llanfihangel y Creuddyn (seven miles).
