Basic camping in the grounds of a Girlguiding owned Manor House, set in the beautiful New Forest.
Owned by the Girlguiding since 1922, Foxlease, a white-walled Georgian manor on the edge of Lyndhurst town, has clearly reaped the benefits of the sixth law of Girlguiding: ‘to respect all living things and take care of the world around you’. Beyond the house, lawns merge gradually into great oak, ash and birch trees and wildlife sings its constant song, from birds nesting in the woods to the rustling of squirrels, darting from trees to undergrowth. It’s the same as it ever has been since the home was first built in this central New Forest setting. And it’s the ideal scene for a campsite. Today, you needn’t be a fully signed up Guide to pitch your tent in Foxlease’s sweeping 65-acre grounds. The estate, with various different camping meadows, welcomes families from far and wide, too, opening up its tent-only campsite. While the campsite is ensconced in the very heart of the national park, it only takes around 10 minutes to walk into the centre of Lyndhurst, the New Forest’s largest town and home to the main visitor centre. The town offers rainy-day cafés and hideouts, as well as bike shops, where you can pick up a set of wheels and head out in search of New Forest ponies. There’s a vast network of car-free trails in the national park and, with a picnic packed, a bike is often the wisest way to explore as a family. After all, any good Guide knows the second law is to use your time and ability wisely. Spending a while cycling in the outdoors should definitely be high on that list. And a few days camping at Foxlease? That’s certainly time well spent.

Standard Shared Facility Pitch
Foxlease is great value for money. Other campsites in the area were charging for one night what we paid for three. The fields are large and spacious with good views. The grass has been left long so I'd recommend some wellies for the mornings. The facilities are basic but always very clean. We were camping right next to the road and traffic noise was quite noticeable so just don't pick this site if you're looking for complete quiet. All the other campers were friendly and considerate and we liked being able to choose where to pitch our tent so we didn't feel on top of each other as you can at other campsites. We didn't use any of the activity centre facilities but had the option of doing various activities that were running during our stay which would be good for families. I would definitely stay again but probably ask to be in one of the fields at the back of the site which don't seem to be near a main road.

Standard Shared Facility Pitch
1/3 of the site is very close to a busy road and there was traffic noise even after midnight. After having visited more than a dozen campsites in UK I can say cleanness of toilet & showers were below average. Not unclean but definitely below average. On top of that there were no kitchen facilities nor any freezing. On the plus side the pitches are enormous and it is very close to the city centre.

It's a very good place for access to New Forest and it's got very good activities for older kids (ours are 2 and 5 so didn't get to take part, but there's plenty to do even for younger children in the surroundings). The staff was very helpful and friendly both on site and on the phone. We've, though, been unlucky enough to have been placed closer to the road, which is pretty noisy, even at night. Facilities could do with an upgrade, they are (at lest where we've been allocated) towards the lower end of cleanliness and features compared to other places we've camped in.

The weather made the days we were there otherwise you had to put up with traffic noise, trains I think and the gate house having a party till early hours. The pitches were suppose to have been marked out, but wasn't and if they had you would not have noticed as the entire field was so overgrown, wet and full of a weed that must have had 2.5cm thick stems, not ideal for a camping site.

This site has just what you need for a short break, especially with a dog. Loads of open space, other campers very chilled and helpful staff (tip for route through nature reserve into Lyndhurst was a winner - thank you!). Only negative would be the road noise for pitches in first field.
From the host
Foxlease is a hidden gem in the heart of the New Forest, it is one of the four Training and Activity centres owned by Girlguiding. The Foxlease Estate was gifted to Girl Guiding in 1922 by Mrs Archbold Sanderson. Girlguiding is extremely grateful and lucky to have this wonderful centre, with continued support to the Girlguiding Charity we are able to share this centre. Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK. We build girls’ confidence and raise their aspirations. We give them the chance to discover their full potential and encourage them to be a powerful force for good. We give them a space to have fun. There are many things to do in the New Forest, from exploring new place, spending the day at the beach, walking or cycling the plentiful tracks or relaxing the the village of Lyndhurst. Our site has direct access to the forest, and Lyndhurst is a 15 minute walk. Our campsites are fully equipped with showers and toilets.  Each campsite offers beautiful views either into our woodlands or over green fields. Foxlease is completely secluded, so a proper camping experience is sure to happen. We do not accept Caravans, Motorhomes and Camper Vans. We have lots of adventurous activities for you to take part in, from climbing to geocaching to kayaking and zip wire. More details will be provided 1 month before your booking. If you are after camping fun but don't want to cook all the time, there are plenty of option in the surrounding area and in the Foxlease restaurant. There is a local pub within walking distance that offers cooked meals.
Nearby attractions
It takes just 15 minutes to walk the ½-mile into the centre of Lyndhurst. It's the largest and most central of the New Forest's towns and, as a result, is the main base to get yourself equipped. There's a visitor centre (023 8028 3444) – the place to go to gem up on bike routes if you haven't learnt enough at the campsite – and you can hire from AA Bike Hire (023 8028 3349) on the main road (bikes are also available for hire in Brockenhurst). The centre also has a good museum. Elsewhere, one of the best, and most accessible, picnic spots in the New Forest is at Balmerlawn, just north of Brockenhurst, where the bobbly heathland, studded with ancient oaks, shallow streams and grassy hillocks, is popular with gangs of grazing ponies. Various forestry tracks head off from here and all are ideal for a walk or cycle ride. Wandering from Brockenhurst to the little village of Bank is particularly pleasant
Food and drink
A short walk away, you'll find The Crown Stirrup (023 8028 2339) pub. For everything else, head into Lyndhurst, where the Fox & Hounds pub (023 8028 2098) is particularly good, while The Greenwood Tree (023 8028 2463) and Tea Total (023 8028 4585) offer lighter bites with a cuppa.
