The luxury option to one of the Sussex High Weald's loveliest rural retreats

Walkers have their Sensations; Tesco's have their Finest range; even Megabus offer a 'gold' service for those who like to do their M1 gridlocks in the utmost comfort. And now, the team behind the delightful Dogwood Cottage Camping (aka Phil and Katy) bring us their luxury exclusive hire offering, the Dogwood Glamping yurt. That's not to call the original campsite next door the 'value' option (although it certainly is an affordable choice for a relaxing rural break in the heart of the High Weald), but rather this more high-end accommodation is squared at those more accustomed to a night on mattresses of the strictly non-inflatable kind. So if you're more Twinings than Tetley's, this glampsite might just be your cup of tea.

It's hard to argue with what this latest venture boasts. The Dogwood yurt is a mammoth 20ft diameter felt-lined Ornate Turkmen built from Ash trees sourced from the Glyndebourne Forest. Inside, it's a veritable riad of colourful scatter cushions and rugs that will happily accommodate a family of four, two on deluxe handmade Taurus beds (with firm orthopaedic mattresses) and two have to bring their own camping beds and bed linen. All the basics are included, plus a few welcome extras like a radiator, kettle, toaster, mini fridge, Egyptian cotton bed linen (freshly laundered and ironed) and the Morso wood-burning stove really sets it off. Outside, the spacious pristine decking area comes complete with a picnic table, parasol and firepit for enjoying a lazy al fresco evening meal.

New for 2015, the ever-resourceful Phil and Katy have masterfully crafted a brand-new camping cabin. From its secluded pondside spot amidst ash and willow trees, the Dogwood Cabin is a cosy abode for any glamping couple. This full-insulated and heated lodge has all the mod cons – futon double bed, silent mini-fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a compost loo. For all the creature comforts, campers can still immerse themselves in the sights and smells of The Great Outdoors by flinging open the French windows or lazily reclining on the sun-trapped veranda.

Location-wise, this little site ticks all boxes. All the facilities of the adjacent low-key campsite are available to use, while the quaint village of Brede lies at the heart of the Sussex High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's vast undulating grasslands are ripe for long country walks, before collapsing in a comfy sofa at one of the region's innumerable country pubs for a pint of the local ale. Rye's ancient cobbled streets beckon you to visit its timbered houses and picturesque harbour, while the pivotal towns of Battle and Hastings (1066 and all that) are also nearby.

Though a wealth of attractions await in all directions, you'll want to make sure you get back to camp for a spot of stargazing. Dogwood lies under some of the UK's clearest night skies – a real boon for a campsite this close to the capital. With Brede free of streetlights, light pollution is non-existent. As the video below of the recent Geminid meteor shower shows, Dogwood's glampers are in for a treat. So stoke up the firepit and toast the marshmallows, or if it's just the two of you, recline on your deluxe bed and admire the twinkling stellar tapestry through the roof wheel in your cosy canvas retreat.

Yurt

Yurt · Sleeps 4
Reached down a leafy lane lined with Oak trees, the yurt is a 20 foot diameter, felt-lined Ornate Turkmen built from Ash trees sourced from the Glyndebourne Forest and is of a strikingly beautiful construct. It has a 6 foot roof wheel which is great for lighting during the day and on clear nights gives fine views of the stars. There are barn owls, badgers and rabbits for company and the surroundings are usually alive with birdsong, with an amazing morning and dusk chorus. Externally the yurt is surrounded by decking including a firepit and picnic table; there is parking very close by. Internally the yurt is decorated in an eclectic but chiefly Tibetan style and includes the following: - a Morso Wood Burning Stove. A radiator is also available for additional warmth. -  2 x Deluxe Handmade Taurus beds (90cm  x 180cm); including firm 'orthopaedic' mattresses. - Quality bedding including duck down duvets and pillows. Egyptian Cotton bed linen. - Kettle, mini-fridge, electric lighting. Complimentary tea and coffee provided. Complimentary mineral water. - Chairs, small table and other basic furniture including cushions. - Travel cot available - Outside – picnic bench, parasol, fire bowl. - Small shop on site selling milk, eggs, wood, occasional homemade bread. Pets Sorry... no pets are allowed in the yurt. CateringApart from the electric kettle, toaster, mini fridge and wood stove, there are currently no catering facilities available at the yurt. We do have a small shop on site for basic supplies as well as free range eggs (the ones from our chickens, when available, are organic). There is plenty of space outside for cooking for those who have their own cooking equipment - no cooking is allowed inside the Yurt. A firebowl is provided for outside cooking. Most importantly however, a 10 minute walk from the yurt is the Red Lion 'gastro' pub which does great lunches and dinners (and good beer!). We also recommend the Broad Oak, a 10 minute walk or a short driving distance away. Also walking distance is the incredible Three Legs microbrewery. Various restaurants in Rye will also deliver as far as Brede. Depending upon availability organic vegetables available for purchase from our vegetable garden. The Yurt is ideal for two but certainly has the space, if not the actual beds, to accommodate a couple of children and is easily adaptable to small family occupation. It can be made up as either a twin or a double as in the pictures below – please let us know which you prefer on booking. Please note we provide only bed linen for the two beds, any additional children must bring their own camp beds and bed linen. Midweek stays are available at £105. Please contact Dogwood directly to book.

Nearby attractions

Amid the High Weald AONB (01580 879500), there are plenty of good walks in the local area while a stroll in Brede High Woods is a particular highlight, the stunning ancient trees are over 400 years old and home to an array of birdlife. Head south to the numerous beaches that are within driving distance, Camber Sands being perhaps the most well known, or stop at one of the coastal towns. Hastings is an excellent place, not only for its historic old town and famous connections with the invasion of 1066, but also for the spattering of fantastic seafood that can be found. Further inland, Battle, is where William the Conqueror defeated Kind Harold II and the spectacular Abbey (01424 775705) he built to commemorate the event also has a visitor centre with a wealth of information. History lovers should also visit Rye, a wonderfully unspoilt ancient port town. The 14th century Bodiam Castle (01580 830196) is a few miles north of the campsite, while Scotney Castle (01892 893820) and Bateman's (01435 882302), Rudyard Kipling's former home, are further but still less than half an hour's drive. Those hoping for something walkable need look no further than wine tasting in the Carr Taylor Vineyard (01424 751716) or The Giants of Brede (01323 897310), a steam museum with free entry.

Food and drink

There is a small onsite shop selling home-grown organic seasonal veg, free-range eggs and other essentials. The Red Lion (01424 882188) pub is just 10 minute stroll across the fields and serves great local seasonal British cuisine, while The Rainbow Trout (01424 882031) is a 15 minute walk towards Broad Oak and provides a great selection of meals as well as a sizeable beer garden. Both are dog friendly. Brede Farmer's Market (01424 813928) runs every Friday 10am-12 noon in the village hall. It offers a fantastic selection of local produce and a warm welcome is guaranteeed... as are a few delectable tasters as you wander round! There's also a convenience store within walking distance and a large Sainsbury's 10 minutes drive away. For those fans of the grape, the family-run Carr Taylor Vineyard (01424 752501) offers tasting tours from £10.
