Bell tents and yurts for classic glamping in East Sussex
Crockstead Fields has all the elements for a weekend of classic glamping in the East Sussex countryside near Lewes. You’ll sleep in a bell tent or yurt, you’ll have a campfire, and you’ll let the kids run free in a field. This place is all about making access to the outdoors easy: tents are put up for you, beds are made, and cooking kit is provided. All you need to do is get here—and that’s pretty easy too. This place is just off the A22, which provides a direct link to the south coast in one direction and to London in the other.
There are two yurts and 10 bell tents to choose from at Crockstead. The yurts, which are open year-round, are the option for you if you prefer to be more secluded. Each sits in its own clearing in the woods with a compost loo and private hot water shower as well as its own fire pit. Bell tents, meanwhile, are the more sociable option and set up just for the summer. They share compost loos, showers, and a communal fire pit, as well as a campers’ kitchen under a stretch tent. Whichever you choose, you’ll find a pleasing boutique camping vibe with bunting, fairy lights, and beds for up to four people.
Between the yurts and the camping field is an area that’s open to everyone: the events field. It’s so called as this place is sometimes used for weddings. That won’t happen while you’re glamping here but the bonus is that it’s open for you to use. There’s plenty of space to enjoy and a range of games and activities to get stuck into: table tennis, crazy golf, and skittles. There’s even a coconut shy. It’s simple stuff but if the sun is shining it might be enough for your weekend in the countryside. If not, the area is great to explore. The lovely town of Lewes is a 15-minute drive away and, if you fancy a walk, there’s the South Downs National Park. Beyond that is the seaside, half an hour's drive from here.

There are some great local pubs and walks and over weekends you can find a working bar, catering options and various other elements in place on the site.

We were due to stay in one of the bell tents but due to the imminent arrival of storm Antoni they had to take them down so upgraded us to a yurt with it's own log burner....this was furnished beautifully and definitely withstands any inclement weather thrown at it! The yurt sat in a little private glade with it's own shower and composting toilet... plus a hammock and fire pit! What more could you ask for?!
I highly recommend staying here as the whole site is well managed though we didn't see the main area where they have outdoor games etc! Henry was a great host, made sure we were well looked after...

Nearby attractions
Crockstead Fields is in the East Sussex village of Halland, three miles south of Uckfield and nine miles from Lewes. It’s between the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the South Downs National Park – so there’s plenty of nice countryside for country walks and bike rides. The South Downs Way is a well-signposted national trail with great views which you can join at Alfriston (12 miles away). The National Trust’s Sheffield Park and Gardens (10 miles) are also a lovely place for wander in landscaped gardens and parkland. You can also hop aboard one of the Bluebell Railway’s heritage trains at the nearby station of the same name. Lewes has a castle, museum, a lido (Pell’s Pool) and lots of independent shops to explore. For kids try Knockhatch Adventure Park (nine miles) or Drusilla’s Zoo Park (11 miles). Eastbourne and the seaside is 17 miles away.
Food and drink
Just half a mile from the campsite is Staverton Nursery which is home to The Spade and Spoon Cafe, a great place for breakfast or brunch. Also nearby is The Blacksmith’s Arms, a cosy pub that’s less than a mile away but, as it’s along the main road, it’s probably better to head there in the car. A little further is The Highlands Inn (two miles) which serves food every day. It’s located on the outskirts of Uckfield which offers more places to eat out and a range of shops to stock up if you want to cook back on site.
