Cleghorn Farm is a mixed farm just north east of the market town of Lanark. Comprised of 250 acres of fields and woodland and bounded to the south by Mouse Water, it is a beautiful spot to get away from it all without having to leave it all behind if you don't want to. The fields are grazed and cultivated but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last ice age with spectacular walks along Cleghorn Glen with the chance to see badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the towering pine and beech trees.
The Mouse Water (pronounced moose) tumbles down along the edge of the farm and has some glorious pools for swimming, shallows for paddling and some spectacular water falls before it joins the River Clyde, all a gentle walk from the sites.

Built in 1733, King Garth is also known as The Old Customs House, reflecting its role in these fraught times of smuggling. Its strategic position on the banks of The Eden served as the perfect lookout for a bailiff employed by Carlisle Corporation to protect the very important salmon fishery. The plaques on the building which commemorate the visits by Mayors date back to the 1700s. These visits no doubt involved indulgent banquets centring around freshly caught salmon
I grew up on the opposite side of the river. On family walks along the Eden I was always fascinated by the house on the other side sited in such an amazing position.
In 2010, when I returned to Cumbria I was amazed to hear that this house was for sale. It was a ruin and everyone told me I was mad..... I probably was a little! But I soon realised that I wasn’t alone in my love of this house, everyone I met from the surrounding villages had a tale to tell about this iconic place. King Garth is for sharing - with locals, (we have an annual barbecue), with wildlife and with people like you.
The aim when renovating King Garth was to celebrate and embrace its history. King Garth is off grid and has no running water. It is furnished in a style to reflect its history. It isn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’: you have to drive a mile down a muddy lane, there is no hot shower, no electric lighting, and a compost toilet. BUT we offer beautiful evenings of candle light, log burner, hot tub under the stars and bathing in the river.
My priority with King Garth and the land attached was to manage in a way to protect the abundant wildlife. There are also alpacas who you can look after during your stay.
You will be astounded by the din the birds make at dawn and dusk!
Inside the house there is an owl box where one summer a pair of barn owls successfully raised chicks. Since then a kestrel frequents the box and has twice laid there.
This part of the Eden is tidal so both estuarine and river species co exist. Kingfishers and otters are often spotted And even the occasional seal! Kinggarth comes with fishing rights and if you want to fish this can be arranged with the host.
The bird feeders are frequented by tree sparrows, yellow hammers, wood peckers, nut hatches and in winter red poll.

The six ‘Langley Longboat’ cabins are positioned on the bank of Langley Dam Reservoir, providing exceptional views over the 14 acres of water and towards Whitfield moor. Langley Dam itself is a commercial fly fishery and Troutmaster water. Visitors are welcome, and encouraged, to enjoy the fishing experience that the water provides (charges do apply, but residents have discounted fishing fees). We also have rowing boats that can be hired for fishing purposes.

The site at Otter Moss is stunning, and set in beautiful, quiet Cumbrian countryside. Ruth and her family are lovely hosts, and the beautiful cabins and yurts make the camping experience cosy and comfortable. Close to Hadrian's Wall and less than an hour from the Lake District, this is really a special find. Would highly recommend!

We absolutely loved this place! Amazing view, very private and very clean. The pods were really nicely arranged so you don’t feel like you are close to your neighbours. There was coal for the bbq and had a good coffee/tea station.

The pods were great, they had everything you needed including salt, pepper, sugar, tea coffee and milk, and were clean and comfortable. The camp site was nice and quiet and we enjoyed watching the cows in the neighbouring fields. We had an issue with the electrics while we were there and Terry the owner came down straight away and sorted it for us, which was massively appreciated.

Such an amazing stay - we loved having the whole field to ourselves and the doggos being able to roam off lead. The cabin was super cozy and we loved the outdoor covered kitchen area. So many small touches made this off grid stay feel like a proper luxury. Everything was super clean (even the BBQ!).
Excellent views, proximity to loads of lovely little walks and adventures, cool wildlife. Susan was so welcoming and helpful but also content to just leave you be to enjoy the land.
A couple things to be prepared for -
To get there, you need to take your vehicle up a rough gravel path.
There's no fridge so if you need milk for your tea, you may need to bring a cooler.
We're already planning our next visit. 🙌

Lovely stay in a lovely location! Would highly recommend for a few days of switching off. A car is necessary and I’d recommend bringing your own food to cook! A cool box would also be useful if it’s warm as there isn’t anywhere to store food.

We had the BEST 2 nights here, it’s like paradise, the lake and grounds are so stunning and peaceful. On our first night we spotted a big tawny owl watching us from a tree, just beautiful. Literally everything you could need is here and we loved being all cosy in the hut together whilst it was raining. We just had so much fun and quality time together enjoying the simple life and cannot wait to come again thank you so much xxx

2 nights at Otter Moss Accommodation
We had such a lovely time staying in the cabin at Otter Moss for my boyfriend’s birthday weekend. It was the perfect getaway. It’s a really rustic and cozy spot, and the countryside around it is just beautiful. We had so much fun taking the rowboat out on the pond, and we even got to meet the two wild red deer that live on the land. They’re a mother and daughter, and they were so curious and friendly, which made the stay even more special. The hosts were also amazing. We were having a nightmare with transport, but they went out of their way to pick us up and drop us off, which helped us out so much. We’re so grateful for their hospitality and for helping us have such a great birthday weekend. Definitely recommend staying here if you want a nice, quiet break.

When to go
Spring through autumn is the best time to visit Wauchope Forest. Mild, sometimes warm, temperatures and long daylight hours mean that you can enjoy the outdoors to the fullest and have your best chance of spotting wildlife. It is a year-round destination, however, but be aware that winter days are short and often wet. Those who wish to set up camp should note that motorhomes and campervans are typically permitted to park overnight at the Wauchope car park from April through October.
Know before you go
- Having your own transport is essential for reaching Wauchope Forest.
- You’ll find a selection of places to shop, eat and drink in Hawick and Newcastleton, both around a 20-minute drive away. There are also public toilets in Hawick.
- The weather is always unpredictable in Scotland. Even in the height of summer, bring warm, wet weather gear.
- When visiting any natural setting in Scotland, be sure to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
