Cleghorn Farm is a mixed farm just north east of the market town of Lanark. Comprised of 250 acres of fields and woodland and bounded to the south by Mouse Water, it is a beautiful spot to get away from it all without having to leave it all behind if you don't want to. The fields are grazed and cultivated but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last ice age with spectacular walks along Cleghorn Glen with the chance to see badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the towering pine and beech trees.
The Mouse Water (pronounced moose) tumbles down along the edge of the farm and has some glorious pools for swimming, shallows for paddling and some spectacular water falls before it joins the River Clyde, all a gentle walk from the sites.

Built in 1733, King Garth is also known as The Old Customs House, reflecting its role in these fraught times of smuggling. Its strategic position on the banks of The Eden served as the perfect lookout for a bailiff employed by Carlisle Corporation to protect the very important salmon fishery. The plaques on the building which commemorate the visits by Mayors date back to the 1700s. These visits no doubt involved indulgent banquets centring around freshly caught salmon
I grew up on the opposite side of the river. On family walks along the Eden I was always fascinated by the house on the other side sited in such an amazing position.
In 2010, when I returned to Cumbria I was amazed to hear that this house was for sale. It was a ruin and everyone told me I was mad..... I probably was a little! But I soon realised that I wasn’t alone in my love of this house, everyone I met from the surrounding villages had a tale to tell about this iconic place. King Garth is for sharing - with locals, (we have an annual barbecue), with wildlife and with people like you.
The aim when renovating King Garth was to celebrate and embrace its history. King Garth is off grid and has no running water. It is furnished in a style to reflect its history. It isn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’: you have to drive a mile down a muddy lane, there is no hot shower, no electric lighting, and a compost toilet. BUT we offer beautiful evenings of candle light, log burner, hot tub under the stars and bathing in the river.
My priority with King Garth and the land attached was to manage in a way to protect the abundant wildlife. There are also alpacas who you can look after during your stay.
You will be astounded by the din the birds make at dawn and dusk!
Inside the house there is an owl box where one summer a pair of barn owls successfully raised chicks. Since then a kestrel frequents the box and has twice laid there.
This part of the Eden is tidal so both estuarine and river species co exist. Kingfishers and otters are often spotted And even the occasional seal! Kinggarth comes with fishing rights and if you want to fish this can be arranged with the host.
The bird feeders are frequented by tree sparrows, yellow hammers, wood peckers, nut hatches and in winter red poll.

My wife and I spent 5 nights here in our roof top tent with a second tent to sit and cook in. We are totally self sufficient carrying all our own food, water and toilet facilities. We were the only ones camping there, and it was so peaceful and quiet, with just the sound of birds singing and owls twittering. Malcolm was incredibly friendly and checked to see we were ok and made sure we had plenty of wood for huge camp fires. We were completely surrounded by trees and even though the main road was not far away we could not hear any traffic noise. It was the rise of the midge season and local pharmacies sold sprays and lotions that contain 50% diet which came in handy. If you want safe wild camping then this is the place to stay. Will go back.

Hi just back from malcom's the place is amazing we parked in the middle of the woods all u can hear is the wild life and malcom he is such a nice and friendly guy and he brings u loads of fire wood for your fire pit and the 2 dogs loved it and will i go back there again well the answer is yes will be there again the end of month if u want to go wild no electric no water well sorry there's a fresh water spring in the woods and it tastes better than my tap water but if u want to go of grid in the wild give malcom a call you will enjoy came back feeling brand new and can't wait till end of month to get back there

3 nights at St Conan's Escape
St. Conan's Escape was such a beautiful area to disappear into! The property manager, Hazel, did such a phenomenal job of preparing the space--it was so beautifully-decorated and clearly well-maintained that I could see this as the perfect experience for other solo travelers or couples looking for a beautiful location to sink into.
I found St. Conan's Escape when looking for a place to go off-grid for a couple of days in the midst of traveling, and it had everything I needed--all of the amenities including plenty of cookware, a bathroom and extremely comfortable bed, so that I could focus on my writing projects. What a beautiful scenery it's in, too! I woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the mountains in the distance and I was so sad to leave such a majestic view. I would absolutely return and recommend it to anyone looking for a new experience!

We absolutely loved our stay at King Garth! It is located in such a tranquil location beside the river and away from other houses, but with alpacas for company! The hot tub was perfect to relax in and we enjoyed a cosy, candlelit evening inside by the fire afterwards! It was fascinating to read about the history of the building too! Will definitely be back :)

This Alpaca farm is an absolute must visit. Unfortunately we were only here for 1 night but what a visit! This specific pitch is the middle one 1 of 3 that are in front of the Alpaca/Sheep fields and we couldn't have asked for better neighbours.
Lynne was extremely helpful upon our arrival and offered help with anything if it was needed...which it was when I realised I had the mattress but not the stopper to keep it inflated! She came to my rescue with cushions to sleep on which was over and above as far as I'm concerned.
We were provided carrots to feed the animals that evening and my son (4yo) loved feeding Harry the goat and between him and his friends it was a game to see who could feed Houdini before Harry got in the way 🤣
This morning my son was scheduled to feed the alpacas and whilst he was initially nervous he warmed up on the walk and confidently clapped Deeno.
This site is a bit off the road but take it easy and enjoy the scenery. Beirhope Farm is in a pretty stunning part of the country and I would 100% recommend a visit to anyone looking for everything you need on a camping trip.
If you forget anything she has everything covered, including an honesty 'larder' for the snacks or bits and pieces that you've forgotten.
Stunning! We will be back.

We stayed in Phil’s Patch for just one night on our way north. Lynne offered us a warm welcome. We had our own private enclave in the trees. Posh composting toilets and everything well thought out. Wish we’d used the unique shower!

The surroundings are truly beautiful, scenic, calm and peaceful. Lynne has ensured that everything a camper needs is close at hand. The pitches are well spaced out and on good solid terrain. Clean, accessible facilities, well maintained. Adorable alpaca herds literally over the fence. A wonderful retreat, we will definitely return. Lynne is simply lovely and has hit the nail on the head with this site.

We stayed as a birthday treat for my 12 year old. 2 adults, 4 children and our dog. It was a truly fantastic stay from start to finish. Such a unique house and experience. The kids absolutely loved swimming in the river, looking after the alpacas, the hot tub and going back to basics. It was lovely seeing them enjoying themselves with no distractions of the modern world. Games by candle light and food over the bbq, what more could you ask for. Jane was fantastic and made sure we knew everything that was needed before we arrived. Can’t wait to come back.

Where to go
Loch Lomond and the Trossachs
A short drive northwest of Paisley is Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Forest and nearly two dozen lochs offer endless adventure. Scotland’s most famous walking route, the West Highland Way, follows the shores of Loch Lomond, Scotland’s largest body of freshwater. For views stretching across the loch to the Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Forth, hike the accessible munro of Ben Lomond. From the peak of the smaller Conic HIll, you’ll get an excellent perspective over the Highland Boundary Fault. Campsite and wild camping permit areas are scattered throughout the park.
West Coast and Arran
The seaside villages of Largs, Troon, Prestwick and their surrounds are popular escapes for Glasgow residents on a summer day. This stretch of coast also serves as the access point to the isles of Arran, often called Scotland in miniature, Greater Cumbrae, Bute, and even the remote Kintyre Peninsula. Camping on a Scottish island is an experience not to miss, and the mainland coast offers plenty of campsites and caravan parks to enjoy.
Dumfries and Galloway
In the quiet southwest of Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway benefits from being off the traditional tourist route due to the limited public transport to the region. Countryside surrounds the Galloway Forest, a designated International Dark Sky Park, and the coast faces south toward the Isle of Man and Ireland. Four world-class mountain bike parks are spread across the area, and campsites can be found next door and throughout the entire region.
When to go
The traditional tourist season for most of Scotland is May through October. During these peak months you’ll enjoy the benefit of extra daylight hours and warmer weather, but book campgrounds well in advance and be prepared to deal with crowds--especially on the isles. In March, April, and October you’ll have more of the stunning West coast to yourself, but be prepared for wetter and colder weather.
Know before you go
- Paisley benefits from great public transport links, but be sure your end destination does. For places like Dumfries and Galloway, you’ll be best having access to your own vehicle or hire car.
- Waterproofs are an essential packing item for any season in Scotland, as are plenty of layers and thick socks.
- In a west of Scotland summer, bring a midgie net and spray to keep the biting beasties at bay.
