Nestled between the Western Lake District Fells and the Irish Sea coast this site is situated on a working dairy and sheep farm. Farm tours can be arranged on arrival. Four fruit trees near the shower block Half a mile to Gosforth village with Shop, Bakery, Cafe, 4 Pubs providing food and an Italian restaurant. Gosforth and Seascale villages have play parks. Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, Wasdale, Scafell Pike and Sandy Beaches with Cafes selling local ice cream are nearby with most Lake District attractions within an hours drive and Edinburgh a three hour drive away. There are 5 campervan/motorhome pitches, a pod, a modern take on a shepherds hut with underfloor heating, a heated pod and two gypsy caravans with electricity to book. All pitches are on gravel positioned to enjoy views over farmland to Scafell Pike and other fells, they are surrounded by grassy areas with seating and a picnic table. A wooden play hut has outdoor games and toys inside. Awnings can be added on the 3 larger pitches. Tents can be pitched next to units for an extra £10 per night. Situated midway between the Western Lake District Fells and the Irish Sea Coast makes this site ideal for lower or higher level walks. Sandy beaches at Seascale and St Bees have cafes selling locally made ice cream alongside play areas to keep children happy. Scafell England's highest mountain is close by as are a number of Wainwrights. Nearby is Muncaster Castle and Gardens with its Hawk and Owl Centre, also Ravenglass (a Roman port with remains of a bath house),  you can ride up the Eskdale Valley on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (Laal Ratty). Perhaps take a stroll to Stanley Ghyll waterfall. They have a cafe at both terminuses with a museum in Ravenglass where nearby you can sample Ravenglass Ice Cream. Wasdale and Ennerdale are close by both valleys having cafes and pubs.

We are only 13 miles from the Historic city of Lancaster, the Bright lights of Blackpool and the jubilee city of Preston. 4 miles from the first fair trade market town of Garstang and 45 mins into the Lake District. Directions were a little confusing at the start as the sat-nav took us to the house a little distance up the road but once we knew our place it was absolutely fine. What a beautiful place! Everything we could possibly need was there for us on arrival; the pod was lovely and cozy and it was great to be able to sit out around the firepit in the evening. Birdsong everywhere and plenty of wildlife to see around the place. Sadly it was a bit wet to try the boat out but will have to come back on a sunnier day!

We had a wonderful little getaway here, exactly what we needed nice and quiet and surrounded by nature, the pod was clean and cosy and provided everything you need for a stay. The bbq was really nice and worked well. Can was really wonderful and helpful especially with a little mishap we had. 10/10 I would recommend going here and we will definitely be back!

My 2nd time coming here and it didn't disappoint, I didn't want to leave. The pod are beautiful and cosy, exceptionally clean and well looked after. The pods are situation slightly upground which gives them a spectacular view Its so peaceful if you want time to unwind and I really enjoyed the company of the two chickens and the three ducks that visit. Also I love the log bundles that you can buy for the fire pit as it makes starting a fire so easy. Carole and Howard are so friendly and hospitable. Would definitely recommend.

3 nights at Hill Top Huts

Absolutely beautiful site, friendly people around us and the onsite pub food was amazing for one of the nights we visited (pie and gammon are 100% recommend). It was a quick drive from most places we had a day in barnard castle, and this is very pretty. Our dog loved his stay too everywhere we went was dog friendly, with plenty of dog walking spaces for him to run around. Our pod for 4 was very comfortable and picnic bench outside was ideal for breakfast cereal, bring your own cups bowls cutlery and plenty to keep kids busy we took board games and quizzes and he could watch YouTube on his phone. Glad there was a mini fridge kettle (for cuppas) and microwave (for popcorn) we left alcohol outside as it was cold enough overnight. I loved bird spotting on their fields too we will definitely book for the summer time

These pods are lush. There’s everything you’ll need (except bedding for the sofa bed - which is absolutely fine). It’s a beautiful location too. There were a few little bottles of wine on the table when we arrived, which was a lovely touch. Would definitely recommend.

It was a lovely stay at Carrock Sunset! The hot tub and fire pit were our favourite bit. Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for a little Valentine’s Day getaway and would definitely recommend.

Where to go

Around Town

Gatehouse-of-Fleet is home to a number of shops and places to eat, and offers easy access to surrounding woodlands and beaches, making it an ideal base. Close to the centre of town, Anwoth Holiday Park is a quiet site with pitches for tents and tourers, as well as static holiday homes for hire.

Kirkcudbright

Known for its artists and fisherfolk, Kirkcudbright is a 15-minute drive east, on the banks of the River Dee. Cycling, hiking, fishing, golfing and swimming at the nearby, secluded Dhoon beach are a few favourite activities here. Seaward Holiday Park offers views of Kirkcudbright Bay and has pitches for tents and tourers, as well as glamping pods.

Galloway Forest Park

Under a 30-minute drive north of Gatehouse, Galloway Forest Park is a designated Dark Sky Park known for its excellent stargazing. Daytime activities include hillwalking, mountain biking and rock climbing. Inside the park, Glentrool Camping and Caravan Site has a tranquil setting and pitches for tents and tourers.

When to go

April through July is the most attractive period for visiting the area for enjoying outdoor activities. Daylight hours are long during these months, which means you can fit more hiking, biking and more into your day. Gala Week, beginning the last Sunday in July, is filled with festivities, including the Common Ridings, fireworks and a parade. Autumn infuses the countryside with rich colours and October through March is the best time for stargazing in Galloway Forest Park.

Know before you go

Wild camping is legal throughout Scotland as long as you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
While you can get around with local buses, having your own vehicle allows more access to more places. The closest railway station is in Dumfries (one hour by bus or 45 minutes by car) which has direct connections to Glasgow and over the border to Carlisle.
Not all campsites are open year-round: check dates before travelling. It’s a good idea to make reservations in advance if visiting during summer, especially Gala Week.
