Cleghorn Farm is a mixed farm just north east of the market town of Lanark. Comprised of 250 acres of fields and woodland and bounded to the south by Mouse Water, it is a beautiful spot to get away from it all without having to leave it all behind if you don't want to. The fields are grazed and cultivated but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last ice age with spectacular walks along Cleghorn Glen with the chance to see badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the towering pine and beech trees.
The Mouse Water (pronounced moose) tumbles down along the edge of the farm and has some glorious pools for swimming, shallows for paddling and some spectacular water falls before it joins the River Clyde, all a gentle walk from the sites.

Built in 1733, King Garth is also known as The Old Customs House, reflecting its role in these fraught times of smuggling. Its strategic position on the banks of The Eden served as the perfect lookout for a bailiff employed by Carlisle Corporation to protect the very important salmon fishery. The plaques on the building which commemorate the visits by Mayors date back to the 1700s. These visits no doubt involved indulgent banquets centring around freshly caught salmon
I grew up on the opposite side of the river. On family walks along the Eden I was always fascinated by the house on the other side sited in such an amazing position.
In 2010, when I returned to Cumbria I was amazed to hear that this house was for sale. It was a ruin and everyone told me I was mad..... I probably was a little! But I soon realised that I wasn’t alone in my love of this house, everyone I met from the surrounding villages had a tale to tell about this iconic place. King Garth is for sharing - with locals, (we have an annual barbecue), with wildlife and with people like you.
The aim when renovating King Garth was to celebrate and embrace its history. King Garth is off grid and has no running water. It is furnished in a style to reflect its history. It isn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’: you have to drive a mile down a muddy lane, there is no hot shower, no electric lighting, and a compost toilet. BUT we offer beautiful evenings of candle light, log burner, hot tub under the stars and bathing in the river.
My priority with King Garth and the land attached was to manage in a way to protect the abundant wildlife. There are also alpacas who you can look after during your stay.
You will be astounded by the din the birds make at dawn and dusk!
Inside the house there is an owl box where one summer a pair of barn owls successfully raised chicks. Since then a kestrel frequents the box and has twice laid there.
This part of the Eden is tidal so both estuarine and river species co exist. Kingfishers and otters are often spotted And even the occasional seal! Kinggarth comes with fishing rights and if you want to fish this can be arranged with the host.
The bird feeders are frequented by tree sparrows, yellow hammers, wood peckers, nut hatches and in winter red poll.

Our three, brand new wood and canvas yurts are nestled in our private, woodland hotel garden beside the beautiful conservation (SSSI) river of Scandal Beck. Just a short drive from The Lake District, The Yorkshire and Durham Dales as well as The Scottish Border, we are perfectly located for you to explore.
The yurts themselves are individually decorated with full size furniture, electricity and double beds. The yurts are all located in the garden of The Black Swan Hotel, Ravenstonedale, a multi award-winning hotel, restaurant and bar; recipient of 2 AA Rosettes as well as AA pub of the year for England 2018/19. As part of your stay in our yurts you will receive a full cooked breakfast and buffet option included in the price for 2 people in our hotel restaurant. We like to think of ourselves as a cosy home from home with a relaxed dining atmosphere throughout. We are very dog friendly in the hotel, restaurant, bar and yurts so please bring your furry family members.
Our beautiful woodland is also home to red squirrels (which are seen daily), protected, freshwater crayfish in the river, an otter (seen very infrequently but the nemesis of our ducks), 6 Indian runner ducks, free range chickens and our two cockerels! (Dogs are very welcome but are to be kept on a lead whilst in the woodland itself).
We are very dog friendly and charge an additional fee of £15 for 1 dog/ £20 for 2 dogs for an additional cleaning fee and for some dog friendly goodies such as poop bags and treats. The price of this yurt is based on an occupancy of 2 people. Any other people who will be staying on the sofa bed will add a charge of £40 per person per night for breakfast and their stay.
All yurts come with electrical battery pack, chargeable lanterns, tea/coffee, homemade biscuits, log burning stoves, towels, full breakfast included from the hotel, an outdoor seating area and access to our outdoor toasty warm woodland shower as well as our very cute, wooden toilet cabin. Hairdryers are available in the hotel for your use.

Escape to the Woods
Tucked away amongst the trees at Bowie Wood, our spacious 6m bell tent is a secluded woodland retreat designed for slowing down, switching off and reconnecting with nature.
Set on its own raised timber platform, the tent looks out into the woodland, with a covered awning creating a sheltered spot to sit outside with your morning coffee or simply listen to the forest around you.
Inside, natural coir flooring, a king-size bed and the warmth of a wood-burning stove create a cosy retreat whatever the Scottish weather decides to do.
This isn't a manicured campsite. You're staying within our woodland, surrounded by mature trees, mossy ground, ferns and wildlife. Red squirrels, roe deer, woodpeckers, buzzards and bats are all visitors to Bowie Wood, and after dark the woodland becomes wonderfully peaceful.
Follow the woodchip path back to your tent, light the stove, make a hot chocolate and settle in for the evening. On clear nights, step outside and look up — away from the bright lights of town, the woodland is a beautiful place for stargazing.
Although it feels hidden away, Bowie Wood is close to Stirling and makes a wonderful base for exploring central Scotland, from Stirling Castle and Bannockburn to the Ochil Hills, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs.
Bowie Wood is an ongoing rewilding project, where we’re working to restore and enhance the woodland while allowing nature to flourish. You may notice areas of ongoing work around the wider site as we continue to improve habitats, paths and facilities. We aim to keep any disruption to guests to a minimum.

What a gem of a place - beautiful, peaceful and relaxing . Jo was a superb host with thought to every detail from wood to a fully equipped kitchen . The shepherd’s hut was tastefully decorated throughout with an amazing power shower !
The walks around Winster and Crook were fantastic - we walked for seven hours and we only saw three people - a hidden jewel of a place ! We fully recommend ! Not at all difficult to find with Jo’s carefully constructed directions .

Ruth and her family are lovely hosts, and the beautiful cabins and yurts make the camping experience cosy and comfortable. We absolutely loved this place! Amazing view, very private and very clean. The pods were really nicely arranged so you don’t feel like you are close to your neighbours. There was coal for the bbq and had a good coffee/tea station.

The pods were great, they had everything you needed including salt, pepper, sugar, tea coffee and milk, and were clean and comfortable. The camp site was nice and quiet and we enjoyed watching the cows in the neighbouring fields. We had an issue with the electrics while we were there and Terry the owner came down straight away and sorted it for us, which was massively appreciated.

We had the BEST 2 nights here, it’s like paradise, the lake and grounds are so stunning and peaceful. On our first night we spotted a big tawny owl watching us from a tree, just beautiful. Literally everything you could need is here and we loved being all cosy in the hut together whilst it was raining. We just had so much fun and quality time together enjoying the simple life and cannot wait to come again thank you so much xxx

We had such a lovely time staying in the cabin at Otter Moss for my boyfriend’s birthday weekend. It was the perfect getaway. It’s a really rustic and cozy spot, and the countryside around it is just beautiful. We had so much fun taking the rowboat out on the pond, and we even got to meet the two wild red deer that live on the land. They’re a mother and daughter, and they were so curious and friendly, which made the stay even more special. The hosts were also amazing. We were having a nightmare with transport, but they went out of their way to pick us up and drop us off, which helped us out so much. We’re so grateful for their hospitality and for helping us have such a great birthday weekend. Definitely recommend staying here if you want a nice, quiet break.

We stayed here for 4 nights and it was absolutely perfect, exactly what we were hoping for......just to be able to relax, read and take in the peaceful surroundings.
The site was beautiful and the shepherds hut was very well equipped, clean and cosy.
Jo was a fantastic host, checking us in supplying umbrellas due to the rain!. She was not in anyway intrusive but available if we needed anything.
If you are looking as we were for a break in a secluded area this is the place for you. Although the roads to the site are small and in some cases singal track, we were not put off by this, it added to the seclusion we were looking for. Just sheep for company!
Thank you Jo for a lovely stay, we 100% recommend Gilpin Mill's shepherds hut and will definitely be returning for a longer stay next time.

Where to go
Upper Tweed
Seek adventure on two wheels as you navigate the downhills at Glentress Forest, one of Scotland’s most renowned mountain bike parks. Later take the 1.6-kilometre-long stroll westward along the Tweed to Neidpath Castle, where a former owner fought for Scotland’s freedom alongside William Wallace. Linger over lunch, a coffee or a cold pint in one of the many restaurants along Peebles High Street before settling in at one of the many forest lodges, tent sites, or caravan parks in the area.
The Berwickshire Coast
From the border of England north to the hamlet of Cove, the most southern stretches of Scotland’s North Sea coast are just over an hour’s drive from Peebles. Catch waves at Pease or Coldingham Bays, explore St. Abbs Head National Nature Reserve or walk all 45 km along the Berwickshire Coastal Path. Leisure parks and campgrounds can be found along the whole stretch of shoreline.
Melrose and the National Ways
The Southern Upland Way winds more than 320 miles from Portpatrick in the west to the east coast via the Borders village of Melrose. The town that invented Rugby Sevens is also the start of the St Cuthbert’s Way pilgrimage route as well as a stop-off along the Borders Abbeys Way, a circular walk that takes in the four 12th-century abbey ruins of the area. Camping, yurts and glamping sites are abundant along all these waymarked routes and outside the lively area villages.
When to go
In summer, Peebles and many of the other villages of the Borders host the Common Ridgings, the world’s largest and oldest equestrian festival. As in most of Scotland, the peak tourist season runs from May through October, however the area is a lesser known destination to international visitors than the Scottish Highlands. Autumn can be a wonderful time to experience the foliage throughout the area and provide an excuse to warm up with a dram in one of Peeble’s cosy pubs.
Know before you go
- Book campsites well in advance during peak season, and be aware many sites and private properties may close up in winter.
- Waterproofs are an essential packing item for any season in Scotland, as are warm layers.
- If you’re hoping to surf, bike, or participate in any other adventure activity, source rental equipment or book lessons in advance.
