Camping in Barra

With its beaches, hills, wildflower-covered machair, and Gaelic culture, the little island of Barra packs all of the best of the Outer Hebrides into one diminutive package. It’s a prime setting for outdoor adventures, from boat trips to the medieval Kisimul Castle, perched dramatically on a rock islet, to cycling around the island and across the causeway to Vatersay, or kayaking to surrounding islands and sheltered bays. And getting here is part of the fun—flights land on the beach of Tràigh Mhòr and are scheduled between tides. While summer is the most popular time to visit, autumn makes for a quieter experience.
