Camping in Balnakeil Beach

·

You may think that the extreme northwestern tip of Scotland is a poor choice for a beach getaway, but Balnakeil Beach will prove you wrong. A sweeping crescent of white sand backed by grassy dunes, this Scottish beach gives its southerly counterparts a run for their money. Take a walk along the sand toward the headland and you may find you have the place to yourself. Watch the sunset from the cliffs and you might even feel as though you’ve been transported somewhere tropical. Take a dip in the turquoise, though icy, waters of the North Atlantic if you dare.

Camping in Balnakeil Beach guide

When to go

For long daylight hours and for weather that’s as good as it gets, summer is the ideal time to visit Balnakeil Beach. Its remote setting means you rarely have to encounter many other visitors, let alone crowds. Outside of summer, travel to this corner of Scotland can be challenging but if you do visit the beach at night during autumn and winter, there’s a very good chance of spotting the Northern Lights.

Know before you go

  • Balnakeil Beach is a few minutes’ north of Durness. Free parking is available by the old church ruins just before the path to the beach.
  • There is a main pathway that runs close to the beach all the way to the cliffs of the Faraid Head peninsula.
  • No matter what time of year you visit, come prepared for unpredictable weather. Even in the height of summer you should bring warm, wet weather gear.
